UNITED WAY PREPARES FOR A DISASTER
| Last month the VolunteerCenter of United Way (VCUW) coordinated an Incident Command System (ICS) training for all United Way staff and community members to prepare in the event of a disaster.
The training was held June 22nd & 23rd at the Modesto Regional Fire Training Center (RFTC). Retired Fire Chiefs Michael Wilkinson and William Houk led the informative training session.
View pictures from the training on our Facebook page and see us in action!
The VolunteerCenter of United Way (VCUW) in partnership with Advancing Vibrant Communities, American Red Cross and other organizations hopes to play a vital role in recruiting and deploying volunteers in a future disaster.
During a disaster volunteers will be called upon to staff hotlines, assess damage, sort donated food, prepare meals, comfort survivors, and much more. The VCUW will connect people who want to help to the places where help is most needed.

SOMETIMES "WHEN IT RAINS IT POURS"
| by Larry Hostetler, Sierra Vista Director of Marketing
In 2008 a family came to Sierra Vista's Drop-In Center (a United Way Partner Agency) for support services. They had lost a close family member and then the father was diagnosed with a serious medical illness. As is often the case, the parents began seeking marital counseling. Their teenager became confrontational, and the son showed signs of mental health issues.
At this point they were referred to Sierra Vista by Child Protective Services because of the parent-teen conflict and other mental health issues.
Sierra Vista's case manager worked with the family, encouraging them among other things to get involved with a support group at the Stanislaus Community Assistance Project (also a United Way Partner Agency) for families dealing with the particular health issue. They also started attending couples' counseling.
Then their son was diagnosed with ADHD and began seeing a counselor at Sierra Vista's ADHD Clinic.
As a result of the support identified and provided through Sierra Vista's Drop-In Center, the parents have resources to deal with issues relating to the father's diagnosis and their marriage is still intact. They also state that they have learned tools to help them communicate, more effectively, and that even their children have noticed a positive change in their relationship.
They attend events at the Drop-In Center as a family, and feel like they are now more in control of their circumstances. They know that there are resources to help and where to find them.
The "rain" has stopped and there are now more sunny days, with a forecast of good days ahead.
