Building the Sustainability Pathway!

EarthShift NewsletterAugust 2012

Greetings!

This summer has served as a strong reminder of why Life Cycle Assessment is such important work. With drought plaguing the Midwestern U.S., it's clearer than ever how critical it is to conserve and maximize our resources.

Water footprinting has become one of the main issues being addressed by environmentally leading companies. For practical hands-on training join our Water Footprinting and Water Use Assessment Class with by Dr. Stephan Pfister, October 30-31 in Portsmouth, NH.

Are you wondering exactly how an LCA evaluates your product or service's environmental impacts? Are you curious what the impact category called "ecotoxicity" really means? Or the mechanisms behind acidification and eutrophication and how fate and transport is modeled? If so, then don't miss the last 2012 offering our ever-popular Environmental Mechanisms and Impact Assessment Methods class

It starts August 22, so sign up today!

In LCA news, the ecoinvent Centre team has announced a delay in the ecoinvent 3 database release. Since our Consequential LCA class will benefit from working with the new database, we've decided to delay the course until February 6th & 7th, 2013. Click here to see the most up-to-date training calendar.

And don't forget to join us at the upcoming LCA XII Conference in Tacoma, Washington, where we'll present a session on How to Navigate a Critical Review.

Looking for some tips on how to ensure LCA success? Read on for the 2nd Step in our new series on the 7 ½ Steps to Running a Successful LCA Project. This time, we discuss the process for -- and importance of -- defining a clear project scope.

We also have a special offer for SimaPro users to help them generate the best possible reports with their data through the Report Maker module.

Do you know Report Maker? reportmaker

By Jim Lochran

Report Maker is a module for SimaPro that streamlines the report generation process. Ask any LCA practitioner what the most time consuming task is in creating an LCA and generating reports is at the top of the list. Traditionally when you create a report you use Microsoft Word or Excel and copy/paste the appropriate tables, text and graphs (elements) from SimaPro into these applications. You then reformat these elements to fit the confines of the document.  This reformatting can occur over and over again with each iteration of your study.

Report Maker eliminates this time consuming back and forth process by creating a link between the element in SimaPro and your Microsoft Word or Excel document. Whenever you make a change in SimaPro you simply click a SimaPro update icon in Microsoft Word or Excel and your element is automatically updated in your report!

7 1/2 Steps to Running a Successful LCA Project (Step 2)

ISO 14040-44:20061 sets out a four-phase methodology framework for completing an LCA, including, (1) Goal and Scope Definition, (2) Life Cycle Inventory, (3) Life Cycle Impact Assessment, and (4) Interpretation.

But there is a lot more to running a successful LCA project than meets the eye. In this series, we will use EarthShift's experience to provide insight into how to avoid common pitfalls while maximizing the potential for a useful and meaningful LCA project.step2

Step 2 - Determine Project Scope

Scoping a Life Cycle Assessment project starts with clearly defining the goals and intentions of the project. Why do you want to do an LCA? How will you use the information? Whom will you share it with? See Step 1 for more on that.

Requests for environmental impact information are growing in more and more industries. While most LCAs have been on end use products, many raw materials manufacturers are feeling pressure from customers to provide information about their processes and products. For example, we've had requests from mining companies who are trying to evaluate their impacts so they can provide environmental performance data on their products to their customers who need the information for their own product analysis.

Join EarthShift at the Upcoming LCA XII Conference

LCA XII will take place in Tacoma, Washington this year from September 25th until the 27th. The theme for this year's conference is "Life Cycle Thinking; Life Cycle Living."

On Monday September 24th EarthShift Director Melissa Hamilton and Senior Analyst Nathan Ayer will teach a special course "Critical Review: How to Successfully Navigate the Critical Review Process, Avoid Common Pitfalls & Increase the Likelihood of a Successful Review". Consider taking this course if you intend to publish the results of your LCA or use it to support marketing claims or comparative assertions. ISO 14044 requires that your study undergo a 3rd party critical review process prior to publication. It sounds easy enough, but successfully navigating the critical review process, avoiding common pitfalls, and having a positive review experience can be difficult, time consuming and expensive. Take this course to successfully navigate the process. conference

On Tuesday, September 25th, Nathan Ayer will lead a special session on the LCA of Wood Biomass Energy Systems at 3pm.  These are just two of the many learning opportunities offered at this year's conference. Click here for a list of abstracts. We hope to see you there! To sign up for the conference, click here

EarthShift also plans to send representatives to the following conference this September:

2012 Sustainable Packaging Forum will be held September 10-11 in Pittsburgh, PA

"Essentials of Sustainable Packaging"

  Footprinting Class!

Water Footprinting has become one of the main issues addressed by environmentally leading companies to complement their carbon footprints. footprinting

EarthShift's Water Footprint and Water Use Assessment in LCA class is scheduled for October 30 and 31 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. We are especially pleased to announce that the class will be taught by Dr. Stephan Pfister, a leader in introducing impact assessment of water consumption into LCA. He is also responsible for providing one of the main regionalized inventory datasets and framing the water footprint methodology. Pfister is senior research associate at ETH Zurich and serves as editor for water flows in the ecoinvent database, and for water research at the International Journal of LCA.

Release of ecoinvent 3 Database, SimaPro 8 Delayed

Attention SimaPro users! The ecoinvent Centre team recently announced a slight delay in the release of version 3 of the ecoinvent database. The release date has shifted to September. That means it will take slightly longer to integrate the new data into SimaPro. eco3

Once the database is released, EarthShift will hold a training course called "ecoinvent 3: Unleashing the Power" to help SimaPro users get up to speed on what's new and exciting in the new release. educationImportant LCA Training Update: Consequential LCA Class Delayed

Because of the delay in the release of the ecoinvent 3 database, EarthShift is delaying the Consequential LCA class with world-renowned teacher Dr. Bo Weidema until February 6th & 7th, 2013. Consequential modeling considers market reactions, technological developments, capacity constraints and regulations, thus going beyond the limitations of traditional Attributional LCA. cons
