EcoFinity Life Cycle Solution
Becton Dickinson (BD) is a leading global medical technology company that strives to improve the accuracy, safety and sustainability of healthcare worldwide. One of their many focuses revolves around a common sustainability goal throughout hospitals to reduce waste and increase recycling. EarthShift recently assisted with a project of BDs, in which they proposed a better way of dealing with the disposal of sharps, which consists of a large portion of 15% of regulated waste (part of the 6,600 tons) to leave US hospitals every day. Current practices were disposing of the one time use sharps, made of palstic and metal, by way of landfill or incineration and the plastic safety containers either saw the same fate or were sanitized and re-used. BD's introduction of their ecoFinity Life Cycle solution will recycle up to 70% of the plastic and metal from both the sharps and the containers. In fact, accorording to Randy Veenstra of the Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, where they are piloting the new sharps recycling program, it is expected that 38,000 pounds of sharps will be diverted from the landfill this year.
And by their cradle to cradle comparison of the three systems per ISO 14040 standards, BD is able to show the impacts of their method including recycling and re-use of the products are far less than those of the current practices. |
Environmental Mechanisms and Impact Assessment Methods- 5 session online course beginning Sept 14
This course delves into the details of how various impact assessment methods are modeling the fate, transport & exposure pathways (causality chain, mechanisms) of emissions, allowing you to understand each impact category and why your results change when you use different impact assessment methods. The course discusses the environmental science of impact categories and is intended for students who have not previously studied environmental science. This course will point out the strengths and weaknesses of the major internationally accepted impact assessment methods, thus allowing you to choose the best method for your LCA study.
The course is split up in to 5 three hour online sessions during the time of Sept 14 through Nov 30. For more details on how the course is split up and and what each session includes see our full course description. |
