Total Cost Assessment - an Evaluation of Biofuel Production

Total Cost Assessment (TCA) is a key tool for organizations to evaluate their sustainable development considerations.  It enables a better decision making process by evaluating all of the "what if's" correlated to the choices.

For example, this method was recently put to practice in Japan to evaluate and compare the risks associated with creating biofuels from two different sources.  The study, facilitated by EarthShift founder and Chair of the TCA Roundtable, Lise Laurin, assessed the use of waste to produce methane as well as the use of raw crops to produce ethanol.

Looked at through the eyes of the stakeholders and the community, utilizing waste to produce methane not only provides a service by producing the methane but also by simply using the waste in conjunction with creating useful by-products of compost & manure. It creates a win-win situation on top of being cost effective. Dr. Kiyotada Hayashi of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization of Japan organized and funded the study.

For more detailed information on TCA, read up about it on our website or check out one of EarthShift's TCA facilitation workshops, often given in conjuction with the AIChE. For more information on the biofuels study keep your eyes on this newsletter--we'll notify you when it has been published in a peer-reviewed journal at a future date.

cycle 2010Cycle 2010 - presentation preview
EarthShift Canadian consultant, Nathan Ayer, will be presenting a study comparing the life cycle  environmental impacts of farmed salmon production through the convetional marine net-pen systems as compared to three recently emerging "eco-alternatives" using closed containment technologies.
With aquaculture becoming one of the fastest growing food productions in the world, an emphasis needs to be put on evaluating the life cycle impacts of these food production systems to create better alternatives.  This study provides a good example of how alternative systems built to address existing issues of concern, with out first examining life cycle impacts,  can really just produce burden swaps.
aihce AIHce conference 2010
In conjunction with the AIHce conference this May 22-27 EarthShift founder, Lise Laurin, will be teaching an Intro to LCA course. The AIHce conference hosts thousands of industrial hygeine and occupational and environmental health and safety professionals.
To find our more about this conference  visit the AIHce website.
Impact Assessment Methods- Which one to use?
Are you not quite sure how to choose the best method to evaluate your impacts?  Or would you just like to know more about of the most widely used methods?  Maybe it's time for you to create your own method that directly addresses your organizations areas of concern?
EarthShift has you covered with our Impact Assessment Methods course on June 1 and our Creating Impact Assessment Methods online course on April 20 and July 27.

A Special Reminder...
This Earth Day, April 22, we at EarthShift hope that you will not only take the time to celebrate our amazing earth, but also to appreciate the work you do towards preserving it. As with any revolution, the green movement comes with it's challenges, and as we jump these hurdles together let's not forget our true cause for these changes, a healthy planet to support healthy people.
