Did you know the Building Industry...
- accounts for more than 40 million tonnes of waste per day in the US
- uses 40% of the world's energy
- uses 40% of the raw materials taken from the planet every year
...needs to use LCA |
With the use of EPDs, LEED certifications and Green Globes ratings becoming more prevalent around the world, it won't be long before it is common practice to declare your environmental performance. Have you given any thought to how your label will read?
That is why EarthShift has teamed with Athena to teach a new class, LCA for the Building Industry. Life Cycle Assessment is the science behind these sustainability measurements, and can optimize your business decisions for developing sustainable materials and building designs.
LCA is no longer just for the expert - it is a crucial design, procurement and marketing tool! |

Course Outline
· Intro to LCA: learn the steps for conducting an LCA according to ISO protocol. Leave with an understanding of how to collect Life Cycle Inventory Data for your materials. · LCA Applications in the Building Industry: learn about the current standards and proposed building standards that are incorporating LCA. Get an overview of ISO 21930, 'Sustainability in building construction - Environmental declaration of building products'. · SimaPro Demo: gain an understanding of the world's most popular LCA software. · Impact Estimator Training: learn how to use this software, which illustrates the environmental effects of changes in shape, design or material make-up of a building and allows designers to optimize operating and embodied energy effects over the complete building life cycle. · EcoCalculator Training: acquire the skills for evaluating and comparing the environmental effects of assemblies. |

Where is LCA used? · The Green Globes rating system now offers an educational credit to design teams who use LCA as part of their evaluation process, and LCA is part of the new Green Globes Green Building Assessment Protocol for Commercial Buildings, now under public review with ANSI. · The LEED rating system will soon incorporate LCA as an alternative to the recycled content, rapid renewal and regional purchasing credits. · And ISO 21930:2007 provides the principles and requirements for typeIII environmental declarations (EPD) of building products, guiding building material manufacturers through the steps for communicating the sustainability of their products to businesses and consumers. |
