Mastercam Tech Tip

Moving from XP to Windows 7?

The Mastercam X5 "Update Folder" works very well when migrating Mastercam from an older version of Mastercam. But if you need to move specific Mastercam files from XP to Win 7, there are more steps required:

  1. Archive all Mastercam folders and files before installing Windows 7.
  2. Once Windows 7 is installed it will be a "clean" system with the XP file structure replaced by the new file structure.
  3. Install Mastercam X5.
  4. Copy the needed files from the XP archive to the Windows 7 machine, refer to the "Transition Guide" for the changes in file locations.
  5. Any files that contain internal paths, such as machine and control definition files, need to be edited and the paths changed from the XP paths to the Windows 7 paths.

Inventor 2012 New Features:
Faster Clicks and Picks with the New Marking Menu

The new Inventor is here, Inventor 2012, and as always there are a ton of improvements to just about every aspect of the program. Not the least of which is the new Marking Menu.

The idea is to keep your attention on the task at hand: Developing your digital prototype model.

Traditional tool menus tend to line up around the sides of your drawing screen. This makes sense as you don't need any clutter in the way of your design.   However, what this does is force your attention and your eyes to wander away from the parts or features you are working with.  Wander no longer.

Faster:
A quick right-click brings up a handy set of commands which is tuned to the task of the moment, right where you are working. The marking menu appears where your mouse is, and goes away when you are done. No more driving all over the screen looking for a tool button.

Task Oriented:
It's context sensitive so you get drawing commands while drawing, sketch commands while sketching, and modeling commands while part modeling.

Customizable:
The Marking Menu is easily customized to fit your exact needs at any time in the process.

So give it a try! You'll find your new Inventor Marking Menu to be fast, flexible, and most importantly focusing. Spend less time browsing and mousing and more time designing and refining.
