MDAC launches UK sister charity

13 January 2009

Yesterday evening MDAC launched its sister charity "MDAC-UK" at a fund-raising event at the House of Lords in London.

The event was hosted by Baroness Elaine Murphy, herself a former professor of psychiatry and now a member of the House of Lords. MDAC staff presented on their human rights work, with a focus on Bulgaria, a country on which MDAC-UK has chosen to focus their fundraising efforts in the first instance. The guest of honour was comedian and former mental health nurse Jo Brand, who gave a moving and at times hilarious speech. The event finished with Chair of the MDAC-UK Trustees Jeannie Mackie asking people to dig deep into their pockets, even in the current financial crisis.

Around 250 people attended the event. They came mainly from the legal and medical professions, as well as from commerce, the media, and trusts and foundations. The event was paid for entirely by personal donations from MDAC-UK Trustees.

MDAC-UK has been established to provide a way of supporters in the UK to contribute tax-efficiently to advance the human rights of children and adults with intellectual disabilities and mental health disabilities abroad. If you are a UK income taxpayer you can contribute to MDAC-UK by clicking on www.mdac.info/uk. To express your interest in the UK charity, please email support@mdac.info.

MDAC-UK is registered by the Charity Commission of England and Wales, Registered Charity Number 1124016.
