Bishop Taylor Black & White

ReflectionWeekly Reflection

Eight years ago today I was installed at the Cathedral as the VI Bishop of the Diocese of Western North Carolina.  Sometimes it seems like eight minutes ago and sometimes a little longer than that.  I think of the changes - driving 35,000 miles a year, I've gone through one car; my hair is grayer and there's less of it; and I am no longer a "younger" bishop in the Church (I am the 999th bishop ordained and we are now up to 1063).  I have also learned some things.  I know where every Episcopal parish and every Starbucks is in Western North Carolina; I have gotten used to most of the liturgical surprises; and I have learned how to negotiate General Convention.

The real growth has been internal and relational.

I quickly learned that when I come to the office, I only think I know how the day will go because it's always a surprise.  Any stillness must come before I get to the Bishop Henry Center. My morning includes the Daily Office, time to scribble in my journal, and a period of quiet.  On my good days, I am conscious of how that moment of centeredness permeates the day.  Even on my bad days that time reminds me that it's not my Church and it's not my diocese and it's not even my day. It's all in God's hands.  Bishop Weinhauer pasted a piece of paper on the bishop's desk which remained through Bishop Johnson's episcopacy and has been there for my eight years. It says: "Do not feel totally, personally, irrevocably responsible for everything. That's my job. Love, God."

Our true freedom comes from doing our best and letting go. We are to engage fully in the work God gives us to do but then surrender to the divine will. These eight years have at least allowed me to recognize this pattern and sometimes embrace it more easily than in the past.

Second, it's relationships.  An organizational consultant told me that in every organization there are two aspects: the service and the client.  That is, the task one is to do and the people one wishes to serve.  While we do need to focus on giving our best to the task - the sermon, the meeting, the project - we always need to begin with the relationship.  I have had to learn this in eight years.  The Diocese is not a business, although we require professional standards in all our affairs.  The Diocese is a matrix of relationships: parishes, laity,  priests, deacons, bishops and so on. I am all for being task oriented, but if we do not connect with one another - especially when the vast majority of those working are volunteers - the work never flourishes. To a real degree, that connection is the work.

Many years ago a wise man told me, "Churches are places where people learn to love."   My eight years have taught me that Churches are also places meant to teach the world what that love looks like.  We are one of the few open doors left in the USA. Anyone and everyone wander in. They don't come in ready to give their skills to projects; they come in wondering if they can connect with something bigger than themselves - with God, with a community, and with a purpose that makes a difference.  I have learned to attend to that intention.

It's a privilege to be your bishop.  It's an honor to ordain and confirm and bless. Most of the time, it's fun to represent the diocese at meetings of the wider Church (especially at Kanuga when I get to sleep in my own bed).  But it's also been an amazing season of growth for me.

For all of that I give thanks.

Clergy Ember Day

September 20
All Souls in Asheville
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.

Program is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Courageous Leadership
Change can be overwhelming and often lead to anxiety, but change is an ever present reality. Anxiety and fear can become limiting factors that hold us back for the opportunities that surround us. Are there ways fear is limiting your ministry? How could courage contribute to the development of our lay and ordained leaders? Join this workshop to discuss the limiting effect fear has on communities and how we can all (from the ordained to the lay) lead more courageously. As a participant, you'll leave with a deeper understanding of the impact of fear, the potential impact of a courageous community, the critical role of encouragement, and specific ways to incorporate these ideas into your life and work.

Laura CohnLaura Shiver Cohn is a consultant and facilitator with Giant Leap. Laura joined Giant Leap after being a co-coordinator of Leadership Asheville. With Giant Leap, she has facilitated and co-facilitated strategic planning workshops, teambuilding sessions, leadership development courses, and contributed to the development of customized resources that meet the specific needs of clients.

To register for this event, please email Alice Keenan at akeenan@diocesewnc.org by September 15.  Please remember that if you are bringing food to the meeting , do not bring anything with onions.  We are not  taking lunch orders for this Ember Day since the program concludes before lunch.

After 30 Years of Service, African Medical Mission Comes to an End

Jenny McConnachie was on a fundraising trip to the U.S. and U.K when she got the news: the South African settlement where she had operated a medical clinic for over 20 years had been bulldozed by the local municipality of Mthatha; the roughly 3,000 people she had served -- mostly women and children, many of them HIV positive -- were now homeless.

Deacon Sunday

One of the goals of the Deacons in the Diocese of Western North Carolina is to promote and educate about the diaconate. Bishop Taylor suggested we have a Sunday on which deacons visit in parishes that do not currently have a deacon assigned to them. Deacon Sunday will be held across the diocese on either October 7 or 14 (at the convenience of the paricipating rectors and deacons). All active deaoons have been asked to participate. Visiting deacons may preach or teach an Adult Forum or both, and function liturgically for the service. These dates were chosen since the feast day of St. Phillip, the Deacon is October 11. Rectors of parishes without deacons may contact The Ven. Kristi Neal by email or by phone at (828) 216-3010 for assistance.

A Deacon's Perspective from Alaska to Our Diocese of Western North Carolina

After reading the Episcopal Church's National Convention Resolution BO23 on Environmental Justice, I hoped to connect with its proposer, Bishop Mark Lattime, the bishop of Alaska.   Resolution BO23 calls for the Episcopal Church to stand in solidarity with those communities who bear the greatest burdens of climate change: indigenous people.  Specifically, as Episcopalians we are called to advocate for policies which reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  The resolution admonishes congregations, institutions and dioceses to resist the development of more unconventional and environmentally destructive sources of fossil fuel such as mountaintop removal, hydraulic fracking and oil drilling.  An explanation follows the resolution about Kivalina, an Inupiaq community located on the Alaskan Northwest coast.

Cursillo 74
George Sowersby, Lay Rector, has announced Cursillo 74, to be held November 15-18, 2012 at Christmount Assembly in Black Mountain, NC.

Cursillo is a movement of the church. Its purpose is to help those in the church understand their individual callings to be Christian Leaders. The leadership may be exercised in work situations, in the family and social life, in leisure activities, and within the Church environment. Leadership, in Cursillo, does not mean power over others, but influence on others; all of us need to be aware that we can exert a positive influence on those around us.
