From the Desk of the Findlay Fire Department
Thomas R. Lonyo, Chief
Dear Community Stakeholder,
I am writing to inform you that the Findlay Fire Department has recently partnered with several organizations to form the Downtown Fire Task Force. The formation of the task force was necessitated from lessons learned following the Argyle Fire which occurred in February. The task force will be focusing on the following goals:
- Increasing Life Safety Education
- Increasing Fire Code Inspection and Enforcement
- Pre-Incident Fire Planning
- Property Loss Prevention
As many of you know Eric Habegger is our Fire Prevention Inspector. Captain Jerry Greer and Firefighter Eric Wilkins will assist Inspector Habegger in refocusing the department's attention on the downtown historical area. Captain Greer will assist Inspector Habegger in delivering life safety education programs to businesses, focus groups, tenants and/or any other community member requesting such services.
Firefighter Wilkins will be conducting "triage" fire code inspections for Inspector Habegger. This inspection will focus on areas such as exits, blocked egress, storage emergency lighting and smoke detectors or suppression systems. Buildings will be "triaged" by Firefighter Wilkins and the information will be forwarded to Inspector Habegger and in some cases, the firefighters themselves. Buildings with structural concerns will be identified and the information passed on to fire suppression personnel. Hopefully, this will not only reduce the risk of injury/death to our citizens but the responding firefighters themselves.
In the near future you may be contacted by either one of these three individuals to either schedule an inspection or a life safety education course. It is our hope that we can reduce the amount of downtown fires in our historic buildings or at least minimize the damage and risk to those who inhabit these structures.
You may be asked to schedule a Pre-Incident Fire Inspection. This inspection differs from a fire code inspection. In a Pre-Incident Fire Inspection, the fire crews themselves are conducting a walk through so that they may gain knowledge and familiarity with the building and its potential risk(s). Your cooperation with the crews continues to be greatly appreciated! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Please remember...An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of suppression!
Respectfully,
Thomas R. Lonyo
Chief
