Applications Available for 2013 Hancock Leadership Class
Hancock Leadership, a program of the Findlay*Hancock County Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the Hancock Leadership Alumni Association, is a nine-month seminar program designed to strengthen leadership skills, broaden knowledge of the community and motivate participants to become involved in addressing community issues.

The program is launched with a mandatory retreat on a Saturday in late August. This will be followed by one full-day session per month, September through May. Many important local topics are covered, including Agriculture, Public Safety, Education, Health & Human Services, History and others. These sessions are usually held on Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at various locations throughout the county. Class members are also required to take part in a service project that requires participation outside of regular class time.

The Community Gardens of Hancock County project

This year the garden plot at The Family Center, 1800 N. Blanchard St. will double in size, offering 48 plots. Low- to moderate-income families are especially encouraged to apply, but the gardens are open to anyone. Applications will be accepted from March 7-23. A new program at Owens Community College: Owens Community College PTAC Center   The Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTAC) of Ohio located at Owens Community College is a statewide network of counseling offices offering free help to small and mid-size businesses interested in selling their products or services to federal, state, and local government agencies. Our mission is to provide education, training, and consultation services as needed depending on the experience of the business. The goal is to maximize the value of government contract awards coming into to Ohio. Smart Hearts Meeting March 26 Offering Blood Pressure Checks

Smart Hearts, a heart health education and support group, will hold a meeting Monday, March 26 beginning at 12:15 p.m. in the Ruse Boardroom located on the second floor of the Ruse Center at Blanchard Valley Hospital. The meeting topic will be "Heart Disease - Not Just for Men. Facts about Women and Heart Disease." Free blood pressure checks will be offered. This presentation is free and open to the public. SPRING WILDFLOWER MONITORING

Join Hancock Park District Natural Resource Coordinator, Sarah Betts, in monitoring wildflowers at Litzenberg Memorial Woods and Oakwoods Nature Preserve in Hancock County.       Monitoring of spring wildflowers will be conducting weekly at both sites.  Litzenberg will be held on consecutive Wednesdays at 1pm, beginning March 21 and continuing each week through May 23.  Oakwoods will be held on consecutive Thursdays at 1pm, beginning March 22 and continuing each Thursday through May 24.  Persons interested in monitoring (on the listed days or available on other days) or for more information should call Betts at 419-424-1555, or e-mail at sbetts@hancockparks.com

 

SKETCHING WITH PENCIL WORKSHOP

The Hancock Park District will be offering a Pencil Drawing Workshop that will focus on using pencil line, shading, and texture techniques while studying bark, mosses, lichens, and mushrooms.  Saturday, March 24 from 10am-12pm, participants will meet at Riverbend Recreation Area, Shelter 3. This is an Adult Nature Education session, minimum 18 years old, and qualifies for Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist credit hours.  Please register for this program at the Hancock Park District Office, 419-425-7275, by Friday, March 23 with $10 per person.   

 

Fourteenth Annual Golf Classic Benefits Individuals with Disabilities

Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio, in conjunction with WTVG 13abc, will host its Fourteenth Annual Golf Classic on Monday, May 21 at Stone Ridge Golf Club in Bowling Green, Ohio. Golfers from around Northwest Ohio are invited to participate in an enjoyable afternoon of golf while helping support Goodwill's mission of assisting people with barriers to employment achieve independence. Free Be Red Cross Ready Family Emergency Preparedness Program

As part of the observance of Red Cross Month, the American Red Cross Hancock County Chapter is teaching local families how to prepare for disasters at a free Be Red Cross Ready disaster preparedness program. Free Medication and Mercury Collection

Protect your family and community by dropping off unwanted, unused or expired medications or mercury for proper disposal. Spring Collection will be Saturday, April 21st from 9 a.m. - noon and the Fall Collection will be Saturday, Oct. 20th from 9 a.m. - noon at the Findlay Municipal Building Parking Lot, West Crawford St.. Community Foundation Awards Over $346,000 in Grants

The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation Board of Trustees approved grants totaling $346,048 at the February board meeting. This total includes seven competitive grants totaling $149,038 and 44 designated grants totaling $197,010. The board also ratified the following grants from 2011: 37 donor advised grants totaling $147,361 and one designated grant of $1,320.97.

Findlay Village Mall wants to help you celebrate in style FREE Kids Klub Event - Bunny Welcome!

Join us for a fun-filled kid-friendly event as we welcome Bunny on Saturday, March 24 at 11:00am at the Bunny Garden near JerBear's Play Area. We'll share storytime and make a fun "bunny" craft while supplies last. This is a Free Kids Klub activity for kids ages 3-10yrs. Adult supervision is required.

Bridge Bereavement Services will offer a workshop for understanding grief on Monday, April 2 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Beckett Meeting Room at Blanchard Valley Hospital. The event is for individuals 18 years of age and older and is open to the public. Pre-registration is required. Bjorling Selected as United Way Distinguished Volunteer

United Way of Hancock County has announced that the late Jeri Bjorling has been selected to receive this year's Distinguished Volunteer Award. Bjorling will be honored at the upcoming United Way of Hancock County annual meeting on Tues., Apr. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Findlay Country Club. The event is open to the public and cost to attend is $30.00 per person, or $250 for a table of eight. Registration is available by calling the United Way office at 419-423-1432.
