Findlay Named One of the Nation's Top Micropolitan Communities
 

Money-houseFindlay, Ohio has been ranked the sixth best micropolitan community in the U.S. for new and expanding facilities for 2011 by Site Selection magazine, the official publication of the Industrial Asset Management Council. The magazine ranked 567 of the nation's micropolitan areas, cities of 10,000 to 50,000 people which cover at least one county. The Findlay/Hancock County region has ranked well for many years, and moved up from a 25th place ranking in 2010.

In addition, the State of Ohio claimed the 2011 Governor's Cup with 498 projects, after coming in second for the 2010 cup with a 376, more than a 30 percent increase. This is Ohio's sixth Governor's Cup in eight years.

The Findlay*Hancock County Economic Development Office compiled and submitted several projects that met Site Selection's qualifying criteria. Among those that qualified was the opening of HAMLET Protein, representing a $20 million investment, and 85,000 sq. ft., the opening of MITEC, a $33 million investment that created 88 new jobs, the Nissin Brake expansion, which created 135 new jobs and was 280,000 sq ft., the Marathon Petroleum Corp. reorganization, that resulted in 100 new jobs, and several others, making the total number of qualifying projects come to 11, with more than $135 million in investments and 561 new jobs created.

Kiwanis to host The "Original" Pancake Day on Saturday, March 10

On Saturday, March 10, the Kiwanis Club of Findlay will host its annual Pancake Day fundraiser, just as it has for more than 50 years. The event will run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Findlay High School Cafeteria, and features all-you-care-to-eat golden buttermilk pancakes and locally processed sausage. Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for kids and seniors. Tickets are also available at the door the day of the event. Blanchard Valley Center celebrating 60 years of service this year

Bluffton offering R&R for Women 

Women can get tips on work-life balance and self care on Saturday, March 24, when Bluffton University's Women's Council hosts the third annual R&R for Women conference.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Centennial Hall-site of the morning sessions-and Marbeck Center, where the afternoon sessions will be held. Registration for the conference is available online at www.bluffton.edu/women; the deadline is March 16.

 

Physicians Plus Urgent Care Extending Hours

Physicians Plus Urgent Care will be extending its hours. The new hours, beginning March 1, are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. These hours will allow patients who need walk-in urgent care to see a provider earlier in the morning. Physicians Plus provides urgent care for those who may not have a physician or who need care when their physician's office is closed.

 

Social Service Groups Working to Establish Plan for Fire Victims

A group of representatives from local social service agencies was called together to address the immediate and long term needs of the victims from this morning's fire at the Argyle Apartments due to the demographic of the tenants. Resource phone numbers for victims include 2-1-1, an information and referral service offered by United Way; the mental health hotline at 1-888-936-7116 and the Hope House Housing Office at 419-427-2848. Michigan & NW Ohio Chapter, headquartered in Findlay, Ohio will be holding two Walk for Lupus Now events in 2012. The Walk for Lupus Now event for the Michigan region will be held on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at the Detroit Zoo and the Walk &  5k Run for Lupus Now event for Ohio will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at Harmon Field in Wapakoneta, OH. Foust, Executive Director of Lupus Foundation announces resignation

Aleta Foust, the Executive Director of the Lupus Foundation, Michigan & NW Ohio chapter, resigned from her position to accept the Grant Administrator position with the Hancock Regional Planning Commission. The LFA officially accepted Foust's resignation at the February board meeting. The LFA, board of directors is currently conducting a search for Foust's replacement. Resumes will be accepted from interested candidates through March 9, 2012 at the LFA office headquarters in Findlay, OH.

 

Hancock Regional Planning Commission - Grants Administrator

Ms. Aleta Foust, fill the position vacated by Findlay Mayor Lydia Mihalik. The Grants Administrator position has been an important position within the regional planning agency, and has assisted with acquiring over $22 million at HRPC. "Aleta will be challenged to continue the great success HRPC has been able to achieve. I'm sure she will be able to get traction and work well with all of our partners as we continue forward" said Homka.   Ms. Foust was selected out of 22 applicants for the position and will begin work at HRPC in mid-March.

Preschoolers will get "quacked up" by baby farm animals at HPD's Discovery Stories

The Hancock Parks District will be hosting its' monthly Discovery Stories Monday, March 5, at the "Doc" Phillips Discovery Center at Oakwoods Nature Preserve. Discovery Stories are recommended for children, 3-6 years old, with an adult companion. Two stories will be offered at 10am or 1pm. Participants will enjoy a story, song, crafts and some special little guests.

Master Gardener Talks: Herbs and Container Gardening

BRINGING FAMILIES BACK TOGETHER THE TOPIC OF RED CROSS ARMED FORCES FAMILY NETWORK MEETING

Meetings to begin at new time, starting in March

The American Red Cross, with support from Walmart, has developed the Reconnection Workshops, Presented by Walmart for all military families to assist them with managing the challenges of reintegration on March 16, 6 p.m. at the Hancock County Red Cross, 125 Fair St. in Findlay. This is an overview of the Reconnection Workshops Presented by Walmart and information on how local service members and military families can take advantage of this no-cost, confidential program.

 

Armed Forces Family Network

Beginning with the March meeting, the Armed Forces Family Network will meet at 6 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month at Hancock County Red Cross, 125 Fair St. in Findlay. The Red Cross Armed Forces Family Network of Hancock and Wyandot counties meets the third Thursday of each month 6 p.m. at the Red Cross office, 125 Fair St. in Findlay. Community Gardens Registrations Being Accepted

The Community Gardens of Hancock County project is gearing up for its second year. This year the garden plot at The Family center, 1800 N. Blanchard St. will double in size, offering 48 plots. Low- to moderate-income families are especially encouraged to apply, but the gardens are open to anyone.  Applications will be accepted from   March 7-23. The Hancock Parks Foundation was recently awarded a one-year grant

The Hancock Parks Foundation was recently awarded a one-year grant totaling $1,200 by The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation's Fifth Third Bank Fund, G. Richard and Beverly Fisher Fund and Philip D. Gardner Fund.  Grant funds will be used to support expenses of the 2012 Riverside Summer Concert Series, plus financial funding for the 2012 concert series is being made possible by other financial sponsors. The concert series continues to provide free, musical performances attracting visitors of all ages to the Allen P. Dudley Memorial Band Shell in Riverside Park. Wee Ones: Eggs

OHIO IN THE CIVIL WAR

Join nationally recognized historian and author Elizabeth Topping as she talks about ladies fashion during the American Civil War. The presentation starts at 10am and will be held in the Discovery Center at Oakwoods nature preserve on Saturday, March 15. This is the third lecture in the Hancock Park District's Civil War lecture series.
