Blanchard Valley Health Foundation Names Recipients of Annual Julie Cole Golf Fund Skills-Building Scholarship
The Blanchard Valley Health Foundation has awarded the 2012 Julie Cole Fund skills-building scholarship to area junior golfers. Recipients are Taylor Tweed and Brennon Swain.
The Julie Cole Golf Fund offers junior golfers in Hancock County the opportunity to participate in a summer camp at the Dana Rader Golf School in Charlotte, N.C. The fund covers summer camp cost, travel, lodging and meals. It will also assist with fees for participating in an American Junior Golf Foundation (AJGA) tournament or other tournament. The fund was created with a portion of the proceeds from the 2011 Julie Cole Charity Golf Classic held June 6.
DuVernay Named to Ohio United Way Board
Keith DuVernay, president and CEO of United Way of Hancock County has been elected to the Ohio United Way board of directors. He oversees the fund raising and distribution of over $2.7 million dollars annually to meet social service needs in Hancock County. In addition, United Way of Hancock County is a key collaborator in identifying pressing community needs and designing and implementing effective actions to address the community's greatest challenges.

This year's "An Evening of Expression-What Alzheimers?" will be taking on the stigma of aging and Alzheimers.

ENGAGE Seeks New Members
Applications are currently being accepted from students in grades 8 - college who live in Hancock County and are interested in participating on the ENGAGE Youth Council. The purpose of ENGAGE is to promote service-learning, youth philanthropy and civic engagement. Those interested in applying for ENGAGE can pick up an application at the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation office, or can be emailed by contacting Kimberly Bash at 419) 425-1100 or kbash@community-foundation.com. ECLIPSe Partnership's ENGAGE Youth Council Seeks Grant Proposals
The ECLIPSe (Emerging Community Leaders Investing in Philanthropic Service) Partnership's ENGAGE Youth Council has announced that applications for their next round of competitive grants are now available. There is $2,500 currently available for local service-learning projects. Area youth, schools and youth-serving organizations interested in submitting a grant proposal can receive more information and an application packet by contacting Kimberly Bash, Senior Program Officer, at (419) 425-1100 or by going to the website at www.community-foundation.com. The deadline for these proposals is February 17, 2012 at 4:00 p.m.

BVH Auxiliary Holding Quilt Raffle Fundraiser
The Blanchard Valley Hospital Auxiliary is holding a quilt raffle fundraiser now through February 13. Raffle tickets are $10, and only 500 tickets will be sold. The winner will receive a red and white quilt wall hanging decorated with hearts. To purchase a ticket, visit the Blanchard Valley Hospital Gift Shop or call the Auxiliary House at 419.423.5342. All proceeds will benefit Blanchard Valley Hospital.
United Way of Hancock County provides Mini Grant
United Way of Hancock County has awarded a mini-grant to the Hancock County Center for Safe and Healthy Children for $5,700. The purpose of the grant is to assist with expenses for January, February and March of 2012. The funds were awarded from United Way's reserve funds which are set aside each year to address emergency or emerging needs in Hancock County. United Way of Hancock County will also offer assistance by coordinating a community forum of individuals or groups interested in collaborating to ensure that the services offered by the organization continue. That meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 25 at 3:00 p.m. at the United Way office, 245 Stanford Parkway.
RED CROSS YOUTH COUNCIL RUNNING 4 THE RED
Hancock County Red Cross Youth Council will have their 1st Run 4 The Red on Saturday, February 18th, 2012. Run 4 The Red will begin and end at the Findlay Village Mall. Registration begins at 8am. Pre-registration is due by February 10th. Cost is $20 with a t-shirt, $15 without. Registrations are available at the Findlay Village Mall office, at Elder-Beerman in the Findlay Village Mall, at the Hancock County Red Cross office, 125 Fair St. in Findlay and online at www.hancockredcross.org. COLOR SKETCHING WORKSHOP
The Hancock Park District will be offering a Color Sketching in Winter Workshop on Saturday, January 28 from 10am-12pm at Oakwoods Nature Preserve. This is an Adult Nature Education session, minimum 18 years old, and qualifies for Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist credit hours. Advance registration is necessary to attend with a $10 fee (exact cash or check payable to HPD) per person by Friday, January 27 at the HPD office located at 1424 East Main Cross St., Findlay. Community Foundation Offers Workshops to Strengthen Local Nonprofit Agencies
As part of its strategic initiative to strengthen local nonprofit agencies, the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation is offering "Standards for Excellence," a series of workshops in cooperation with the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The four workshops will be held at the Family Center from 11:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on April 11, April 25, May 9, and May 23. Birchaven Village Hosting Community Reads Book Discussion
Birchaven Village will host a book discussion of the Community Reads selection "Still Alice" on Monday, February 6 at 2 p.m. in the Hatfield Dining Room. Refreshments will be provided by Birchaven's professional pastry chef. Following the discussion, tours of the Julien A. Faisant Adult Day Center and the new Birchaven Alzheimer's assisted living facility will be provided.
The event is free and open to the public. No RSVP is required.
RELIVE THE MAGIC OF 1929 AT RED CROSS OSCAR NIGHT: New Location and Night for 3rd Annual Gala
The American Red Cross Hancock County Chapter is once again bringing all the glitz and glamour of a Hollywood party to Hancock County, with the 3rd Annual Oscar Night gala, presented by KeyBank and Reineke Ford, on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Findlay Inn and Conference Center. The theme of the gala is 1929 - Relive the Magic of the First Oscars!
James says the theme is in honor of Findlay's Bicentennial celebration. Free Tax Clinics to be Presented in Hancock County
There are Free tax preparation clinics for residents of Hancock County with low to moderate income to participate in. These clinics assist families in paying for tax preparation and to see if the individual or family qualifies for Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Individuals or families with a total household income of less than $60,000 and no capital gains in 2011 qualify for free tax preparation at numerous local tax clinics. Individuals are encouraged to schedule appointments by dialing 2-1-1 or 1-800-650-4357. When calling 2-1-1, the caller will be asked a set of questions which will help determine the best location for them to have their taxes prepared. Appointments are being scheduled now. The first date to have taxes completed is Feb. 1. The last date for tax clinics is April 17th. Senior citizens can schedule appointments by visiting the Agency on Aging at 339 E. Community Foundation Brings Grant Database to Findlay
The Community Foundation has funded another one-year subscription to Foundation Directory Online (FDO), a searchable, user-friendly database of nationwide grant opportunities. The database is available at the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library. Access is free and open to the public. Reference desk staff will provide the required password to access FDO on a library computer and any support users may need. Bridge Home Health & Hospice Offers Volunteer Training Courses
Bridge Home Health & Hospice will offer training courses for prospective volunteers beginning on Monday, February 13. The training will be held in the Wenner Conference Room at Birchaven Village, located at 15100 Birchaven Lane in Findlay, and will take place for seven consecutive Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Consider the Conversation Encore offered in February
In November of 2011, Bridge Home Health and Hospice offered two local presentations of the award-winning documentary, "Consider the Conversation". The documentary examines multiple perspectives on end-of-life care and includes information and experiences gathered from interviews. Our first encore presentation will be hosted at the Hancock Senior Center, 339 East Melrose Avenue, Findlay on Thursday, February 16, 1:00-3:30 p.m. Please call 419-423-5351 to reserve your attendance. Continuing educational credits will be offered for medical professionals, social workers and funeral home directors.

United Way Seeking Nominations for 2011 Distinguished Volunteer
The United Way of Hancock County is seeking nominations for the 2011 Distinguished Volunteer Award to be presented in April of this year. This award has been presented for the past 30 years to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of philanthropy. The award will be presented at the United Way Annual meeting on Thursday, April 12.
