About the Program:

A Small Business Development function has been added to the website at www.jobsolutions.net. This tool allows small business owners and entrepreneurs a platform to seek "expert" advice from a small group of Hancock County professionals. Participating members of the business panel include the Small Business Administration, JOBsolutions, The University of Findlay, Hancock Regional Planning Commission, Community Action Commission, Owens Community College and the Findlay·Hancock County Alliance, which includes the Findlay·Hancock County Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development office.

The project was coordinated with cooperation from the Findlay·Hancock County Alliance and allows business owners the opportunity to seek advice from the panel in a secured, private communication via www.jobsolutions.net. Business owners will access the website and submit their questions. These will be fielded by The Alliance and answered directly by the expert with the most knowledge about that subject. Any business owner or entrepreneur can sign up for the resource online. The Alliance will serve as the coordinator to make sure requests are handled in a timely manner and the proper follow-up is conducted.

Edwin L. Heminger Named Honorary Chairman of Chamber Foundation Golf Tournament

Heminger, Chairman of the Board of the Findlay Publishing Company, to be the honorary chairman of the Annual Chamber Foundation Golf Tournament Monday, Sept. 12, at the Findlay Country Club. Heminger was selected for his tireless work with The Courier, which is celebrating its 175 anniversary this year, and the Findlay·Hancock County community as a whole.

He was elected President in 1983, a title that has since passed to his son, Karl Heminger, and has served as Chairman of the Board since 1989. "

Study Shows Cost of Living is Affordable for Findlay Residents

Money-houseAccording to the data for the second quarter of 2011, the American Chamber of Commerce Research Association (ACCRA) Cost of Living Index shows that the City of Findlay continues to be an affordable place to live, and has become more so in the last few months.

The data for the second quarter of 2011 showed that the overall average composite index for the City of Findlay was 95.9, 1% lower than data from the last quarter. In comparison to other cities nationwide, the City of Findlay's average composite index figures for grocery items were 99.7; housing 80.4; utilities 93.8.8; transportation 98.5; healthcare 89.3; and 108.9 for miscellaneous goods and services.

These averages showed a slight decrease over previous quarter figures, including categories such as grocery items and utilities, while others sectors like housing and transportation and showed a slight overall increase.

Compared to other Ohio cities, Findlay's data showed that it offered more affordable healthcare than places such as Lima, Ashland, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus, and also enjoyed lower utilities than Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Akron, Wooster and Youngstown. Findlay's Grocery and housing costs were slightly higher than locations such as Dayton, Columbus and Lima, but lower than Akron, Cleveland and several other cities. Overall, Findlay fares well when comparing national figures.

The Index is based on the six preceding components. Prices covering almost 60 different items are collected quarterly by chambers of commerce, economic development organizations or university applied economic centers in each participating urban area.

Compiled and published quarterly by The Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER), Findlay-Hancock County was among the 312 urban areas participating in the Index which measures regional differences in the cost of consumer goods and services, excluding taxes and non-consumer expenditures, for mid-management lifestyles in participating areas.

The average for all participating places in each quarter equals 100 and each participant's index is read as a percentage of the average for all places. However, small differences should not be construed as significant-or even as indicating correctly which area is the more expensive.

For more information on the ACCRA Cost of Living Index, contact the Chamber at 419-422-3313 or
