Edwin L. Heminger Named Honorary Chairman of Chamber Foundation Golf Tournament


HemingerThe Findlay·Hancock County Chamber of Commerce, a division of the Findlay·Hancock County Alliance, has selected Edwin L. Heminger, Chairman of the Board of the Findlay Publishing Company, to be the honorary chairman of the Annual Chamber Foundation Golf Tournament Monday, Sept. 12, at the Findlay Country Club. Heminger was selected for his tireless work with The Courier, which is celebrating its 175 anniversary this year, and the Findlay·Hancock County community as a whole.

 

The Heminger Family entered the newspaper business in 1886, and Edwin began his career working for company in 1952. He was named Vice President of the Findlay Publishing Company in 1959, and Vice Chairman of the Board in 1978. He was elected President in 1983, a title that has since passed to his son, Karl Heminger, and has served as Chairman of the Board since 1989. "

 

"Ed and the Findlay Publishing Company have a long history of service and dedication to the Findlay·Hancock County community, "said Dionne Neubauer, Director of the Findlay·Hancock County Chamber of Commerce. " In light of his lifetime of accomplishments, it is with great pleasure that we honor him at the Chamber Foundation outing."

Proceeds from the golf tournament will go toward the advancement of the organization's goals to support and provide resources to local small-to-large businesses, and improve economic opportunities for all. AthenaSponsored by the Findlay·Hancock County Chamber of Commerce and Huntington Bank, the ATHENA Award honors an exceptional woman who has achieved excellence in her business or profession, has served the community in a meaningful way and
has assisted women in their attainment of professional goals and leadership skills.

The award will be presented in conjunction with the Chamber's 48th Annual Small Business Awards on Thursday, Oct.13, 2011 at Winebrenner Theological Seminary. The spirit of the ATHENA Award program is captured in a quotation from Plato, "What is honored in a country will be cultivated there". By honoring exceptional leaders, others will be encouraged to excel. The award takes the form of a hand-cast bronze sculpture symbolizing the strength, courage and wisdom of the recipient.

Hancock Youth Leadership Class of 2012 Selected

 The Hancock Youth Leadership board is proud to announce the students who have been selected to participate in Hancock Youth Leadership '12. The class was chosen from applications submitted by Hancock County high school sophomores.

 

HYL '12 will participate in a nine-month seminar program beginning with an overnight retreat in August. During the class year, members will be introduced to many aspects of the Findlay·Hancock County community including agriculture, business, health and human services, arts, media, justice and diversity.

 

HYL is an affiliated program of the Findlay·Hancock County Chamber of Commerce, sponsored by the Hancock Leadership Alumni Association. Hancock Youth Leadership is an investment in the future of Findlay and Hancock County. Its purpose is to enhance knowledge and develop leadership skills in a select group of high school students, motivating them to become positive role models, active and committed to their civic responsibilities.

Hancock Senior Leadership (HSL) is a community awareness program cosponsored by the Hancock County Agency on Aging and Findlay/Hancock County Chamber of Commerce designed to develop informed, motivated and committed retired and semi-retired persons for Hancock County.

4Retirees can offer a wealth of experience, leadership and vitality to their communities while enriching their own lives.

 

4Senior Leadership Programs provide seniors with knowledge of community needs, new friendships and volunteer opportunities.

 

Hancock Senior Leadership Objectives

 

· To develop and empower mature adults to assume new leadership roles which contribute to the well being of the community through civic engagement

 

· To acquaint participants with the area's assets, challenges and opportunities

 

· To provide a forum to broaden mature adult citizens' knowledge of the community through presentations, discussions and visits in a series of nine 6-hour sessions

 

· To provide an opportunity to meet new friends who share the same intellectual curiosity and commitment to our community

Hancock Senior Leadership class will meet weekly for nine weeks, each Tuesday from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM beginning September 13, 2011 through November 8, 2011.

The Findlay∙Hancock County Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the launch of its new publication website at villageprofile.com/ohio/findlay.  This interactive site features the editorial, pictures and design elements of the Alliance's recently published, full-color community map. United Way of Hancock County Receives AEP Grant 

Nearly 50 United Way agencies around Ohio are helping more families in need thanks to grants by AEP Ohio totaling $500,000. The grants are part of the company's overall focus on hunger, health and housing through its Partnership with Ohio (PWO) program.

AEP Ohio's PWO program is a three-year, $15 million commitment by the company to help communities throughout Ohio address issues around hunger, health and housing affecting Ohio residents.

 

McMath Joins Community Foundation  

The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation has named Tracy McMath to the position of Development and Planned Giving Officer. In her position, McMath will develop and maintain relationships with current and future donors to assist them in accomplishing their philanthropic goals. 5th Annual Car Tunes on Main Scheduled 

The 5th Annual "Car Tunes on Main", has been set for Sat. Aug. 20. Activities are scheduled all day long, community cruise from noon to 4 p.m., a downtown car show from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and live music. United Way funding rides for senior adults to air conditioned Agency on Aging 

Due to extreme heat expected over the next few days, United Way of Hancock County will be funding rides for senior citizens, age 55 and better, to get out of the heat. Senior Citizens in Hancock County can receive free rides to the Agency on Aging through Hancock Area Transportation Services by calling (419) 423-7261, extension 21 from Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Free rides for seniors will be offered through Monday, July 25.

 

The Agency on Aging 

The Agency on Aging has many activities for senior adults including lunch, a fitness area, table pool and more. Lunch is available for $4. The Agency on Aging is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Thursday and Friday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Seniors are encouraged to bring a book to read or a craft project to work on, or to join other seniors in cards or board games. HUNTING WITH PERMISSION LOTTERY DRAWING SET FOR THURSDAY - AUGUST 4 

Thursday, August 4 at Litzenberg Memorial Woods, located on US Rte. 224 west of Findlay at 7:00 PM.  Residents and land owners of Hancock County will have the opportunity to participate in the Hancock Park District annual Hunting with Permission Lottery program provided in cooperation with Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife. Carey Physician Dr. Dwight Kaufman Retiring After 40 Years Dr. Jewel Engle Joining Carey Medical Center 

Dr. Dwight Kaufman will be retiring July 31, 2011 after 40 years of practicing family medicine. Dr. Kaufman began his career in 1971, and joined Blanchard Valley Health System in 2005. He has practiced at Blanchard Valley's Caughman Health Center and, most recently, at Carey Medical Center.  Patients and community members are invited to wish Dr. Kaufman an enjoyable retirement by sending cards to the Carey Medical Center office, 120 West South Street, Carey, 43316. Following Dr. Kaufman's retirement, Dr. Jewel Engle will join Carey Medical Center.

Discovery Story: Dandelions 

The Hancock Park District will be hosting its monthly Discover Story on Monday, August 1 at Riverbend Recreation Area at 10 AM, 1 PM and 7 PM. Participants and their adult companions should meet in shelter 5 in the Oxbow Bend Area of the park.  Program is designed for children ages three to six, with an adult companion.  Riverbend Recreation Area is located at 16618 TR 208, off SR 568 east of Findlay. A program entitled "Medicinal Properties of Culinary Herbs" will be provided as the final program in the 2011 Litzenberg gardening series on Tuesday, August 9 at 7:00 pm.  Advance registration is necessary to attend with a $5 fee (exact cash or check payable to HPD) per person by Friday, August 5 or until space is filled at the HPD office.  Space is limited.
