Taylor, CSI Ohio Score Major Regulatory Reform Victory
Columbus - Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor today said a new change in state liquor laws is the direct result of the work of CSI Ohio: The Common Sense Initiative and will allow Ohio food manufacturers to be more competitive and potentially create jobs.
"The days of big government standing in the way of Ohio job creators are coming to an abrupt end," Taylor said. "Senate Bill 73 is just one of many reforms CSI Ohio is working on to help us revive Ohio's economy and improve our business community's ability to put their job-creating ideas into action."
Gov. John R. Kasich signed Senate Bill 73 (Manning) at a public ceremony at the Ohio Statehouse earlier today.
At issue is Custom Culinary, an Avon-based food manufacturer prohibited by state law from purchasing alcohol products in bulk. Instead, Custom Culinary was required to purchase alcohol at higher, retail prices and add them bottle-by-bottle to certain recipes, putting them at a competitive disadvantage. In one instance, employees uncorked 140,000 pounds of merlot wine for just one sauce. The burdensome government regulation was causing the company to think twice about plans to expand and possibly create an estimated 60 new jobs in Lorain County.
Taylor first became aware of the issue on January 31, when she received a letter from Avon Mayor James Smith asking Taylor to put CSI Ohio to work to find a common sense solution to the problem. Within three days, CSI Ohio had identified a legislative fix for the problem that had dogged the company for more than two years.
On February 15, Sen. Gayle Manning (R- North Ridgeville), who represents the city of Avon, introduced S.B. 73, which allows Ohio food manufacturers to purchase alcohol at wholesale prices, saving time and money.
CSI Ohio was launched on January 10, 2011 by Kasich to reform Ohio's regulatory policies to help make Ohio a jobs and business-friendly state. CSI Ohio will review Ohio's regulatory system to eliminate excessive and duplicative rules and regulations that stand in the way of job creation.
