Flag City BalloonFest in it's 12th year announces First Federal Bank as presenting sponsor.
The Flag City BalloonFest has grown over the past 11 years. It is now one of Findlay and Ohio's premier events. Committee president Rick Tidd said, "We are pleased to announce that First Federal Bank will be the 2011 presenting sponsor once again this year. First Federal has taken an active role in all the great things that the festival brings to Findlay, and we look forward to making this year's festival even better. Last year we had more media coverage than ever before resulting in record crowds. It was estimated there were over 30,000 spectators during the weekend. " Greg Allen, Southern Market Area President of First Federal Bank commented they are happy to once again be a part of a great event for Northwest Ohio for their sixth consecutive year.
The festival will begin August 14th and run through August 16th at Emory Adams Park in Findlay, Ohio. Tidd stated, "It is just a great family event with many activities held during the weekend including music, entertainment, food vendors, outdoor children movies both Friday & Saturday, hot air balloon competitive flight, 5k run and a car, truck and motorcycle show." Blanchard Valley Hospital Among Top 5% of U.S. Hospitals for Patient Safety for the Second Consecutive Year
Blanchard Valley Hospital is a recipient of the 2011 HealthGrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™, meaning that its patient safety ratings are in the top 5 percent of U.S. hospitals. This is the second consecutive year BVH has received this award.
The HealthGrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™ was based on a study released today by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. Blanchard Valley is one of only 16 hospitals in Ohio and one of only 268 hospitals in the country to receive this designation.
The HealthGrades Patient Safety in American Hospitals Study analyzed nearly 40 million hospitalization records from approximately 5,000 hospitals nationwide that participate in the Medicare program. Participation in the HealthGrades study is not voluntary. Hospitals cannot choose to opt out of the analysis.
If all hospitals performed at the level of Patient Safety Excellence Award™ hospitals like Blanchard Valley Hospital, approximately 174,358 patient safety events and 20,688 Medicare deaths could have been avoided while saving the U.S. approximately $1.8 billion in excess costs from 2007 through 2009.
Medicare patients at hospitals receiving the HealthGrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™ were, on average, 46 percent less likely to experience a patient safety event.
The eighth annual HealthGrades Patient Safety in American Hospitals Study used Medicare inpatient data from the Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) database and Patient Safety Indicator software from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to calculate event rates for 13 indicators of patient safety for all of the nation's hospitals. All analysis was based on data from 2007 to 2009, with the exception of "Foreign Body Left After a Procedure" which was based only on data from 2009. These indicators identify the best-performing hospitals, or Patient Safety Excellence Award™ Hospitals, which represent the top 5 percent of all U.S. hospitals. HealthGrades developed this award to give patients more information about choosing a hospital.
In the HealthGrades analysis, the following are the patient safety indicators studied:
- Foreign body left in after procedure
- Death in low mortality Diagnostic Related Groupings (DRGs)
- Pressure ulcer (bed sores)
- Death among surgical inpatients with serious treatable complications (previously known as "Failure to Rescue")
- Iatrogenic pneumothorax (collapsed lung)
- Catheter-related bloodstream infections
- Post-operative hip fracture
- Post-operative hemorrhage or hematoma
- Post-operative physiologic and metabolic derangements
- Post-operative respiratory failure
- Post-operative pulmonary embolism or deep vein thrombosis
- Post-operative sepsis
- Post-operative abdominal wound dehiscence

Impact of Japan earthquake on Nissin Brake Ohio is uncertain
Several people and local area leaders have inquired about our Japanese associates' and their families' well being given the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. This shows that our local community (along with Nissin Brake Ohio (NBO) associates) continues to have the Japanese people in our thoughts and prayers. Our local Japanese associates are grateful for the overwhelming concern.
At this time, NBO's Japanese associates' families are all accounted for and reported to be safe. However, the impact to our Findlay operations is uncertain at this point. Though our mother company's manufacturing operations in central Japan (Nagano prefecture) are largely damage free, there may be some impact in the coming weeks to our supply chain. Some of NBO's Japanese supplier companies were in fact impacted significantly. Of course the priority of recovery efforts lie first in dealing with the human tragedy. Secondly, we are coordinating parts supply recovery efforts with our suppliers and customers.
Nissin does have an R&D facility north of Tokyo (Tochigi prefecture) that sustained significant damage. Most importantly, more than 150 Nissin associates assigned there were fortunate in that no injuries occurred despite the building damage and damage to the on-site test course. It could be two months or more before repairs are completed.
Many other companies were impacted more severely than Nissin and the human tragedy unfolding in Japan continues to grow. Therefore, NBO will be making a donation to the International Red Cross to support the relief efforts in Japan. We respectfully request that individuals and the community in general consider contributing to relief agencies such as the International Red Cross.

"Garden Tool Drive" to Kick Off Community Garden Project
Hancock County Community Gardens will begin growing this spring, announced Keith DuVernay, president & CEO of United Way of Hancock County. The collaborative effort includes United Way of Hancock County, the MENTOR Initiative, The Blanchard Valley Green Coalition, Ohio State Extension, Master Gardeners of Hancock County, The Community Foundation and City of Findlay officials. Hancock County Community Gardens will initially be open to low and moderate income families and will be at two locations; on E. Main Cross St. between Lye Creek and Eastown Park Row and at The Family Center, 1800 N. Blanchard Ave. Additional garden locations are planned for the future. Organizers met early on with city officials to determine the best land to use and to see what the city could provide for the project. City officials are allowing the project to take place on property that was purchased by the city and cleared of homes after the 2007 flood.
The community garden project will kick off on Sat., Mar. 26 with a "garden tool drive" at the southeast corner of the Lowe's parking lot, 1077 Bright Road and at Masterson's Ace Hardware, 10205 US 224 West.
People can donate used gardening tools in good shape, or can purchase new tools and donate to the cause. Tools will be loaned to families who are accepted into the community garden program and will be returned to the program at the end of the growing season. Basic gardening tools are being suggested such as gardening gloves, kneelers, long handled shovels or garden spades, garden rakes, hoes, hand trowels, water hoses, water buckets and gardening shears.
United Way will be recruiting qualifying families through a referral and application process. United Way will also be handling publicity and updates about the project as well as funding many of the needs like soil testing, payment for water, liability insurance and more. The Community Foundation will be funding many of the needs for the garden location at the Family Center on N. Blanchard Ave.
Families who qualify will sign a contract stating that they will follow the rules. The rules are set forth to protect the gardeners and to build a sense of community. Families or individuals accepted into the program will be required to go through an orientation and a two-hour class per month during the gardening season including preparation, maintenance and preparing the garden site for the winter months. Master Gardeners will also be assisting with the education of gardeners.
Interested families must apply through the following agencies; Hancock Christian Clearing House, Associated Charities, CHOPIN Hall, Hope House for the Homeless, Job & Family Services, Salvation Army, HHWP Community Action Commission, and Blanchard Valley Center.
