Area residents interested in careers in the installation and maintenance of alternative and renewable energy technology now have the opportunity to pursue their higher educational degree at Owens Community College as the academic institution's School of Technology unveils a new alternative energy and sustainable systems technology associate degree program.

Beginning with Spring Semester 2011, the new academic program is being offered on the Toledo-area and Findlay-area campuses. The two-year associate degree program recently received formal approval by the Ohio Board of Regents.

Owens' associate degree in alternative energy and sustainable systems technology will require approximately 65 credit hours of coursework, which includes technology in society, introduction to alternative energy, mechanical systems, power distribution, solar thermal power, wind power, LEEDS certified building, photovoltaic power, geothermal energy systems and biofuels, among other academic curriculum.

Students will develop strong knowledge in the fundamentals of energy and how energy is produced, marketed, distributed and used, as well as how photovoltaic panels and wind turbines produce electricity and their cost/feasibility on different scales, including residential and utility scale. Individuals will also gain insight into how renewable energy sources such as hydropower, geothermal power and tidal power can be used to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

BVH Receives Level III Trauma Verification

The trauma center at Blanchard Valley Hospital (BVH) has been verified as a level III trauma center by the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

This verification program confirms that a trauma center has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all injured patients.

There are four separate categories of verification. Each category has specific criteria that must be met by a facility seeking that level of verification. Key elements of a Level III trauma center include:

24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians

Prompt availability of general surgeons and anesthesiologists

Dedication to improvement in trauma care through a comprehensive quality assessment             program

Commitment to continuing education for members of the trauma team

Involvement with prevention and an active outreach program for referring communities

BVH underwent an on-site review by a team of experienced ACS trauma surgeons to receive this verification.

All BVH surgeons are certified in Advanced Trauma Life Support. In addition, all emergency department nurses and a large percentage of intensive care and surgery nurses have received additional training.

Blanchard Valley Hospital Receives Highest Level of Chest Pain Accreditation

Blanchard Valley Hospital (BVH) has received full Cycle III accreditation with PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. This highest level of accreditation was granted to BVH on January 12.

The BVH emergency department, cath lab and cardiologists worked together with local EMS to receive this accreditation by implementing systematic protocol that reduces time to treatment during the critical early stages of a heart attack, reduces the time that it takes to receive treatment, and increases the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment.

Blanchard Valley Hospital has demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and completing on-site evaluations by a review team from the Society of Chest Pain Centers.

Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, with 600,000 dying annually of heart disease. More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year with chest pain.
