Make a List, and Stay in Hancock County!
Shop Locally this Year...ChristmasShop

While it's the thought that counts, where a holiday gift comes from matters more than you may think!

Ponder this for a moment: Studies have shown that for every $100 spent in locally owned stores, $68 remains in the local economy through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. In contrast, only $43 of every $100 remains local when spent in national chains, and little or no local revenue results from online purchases.

Wow. Purchasing your mom's designer necklace, your son's toy train and Aunt Bea's trendy scarf from a local shops means there is a lot of money staying right where you live, work and play every day. It makes sense.

It might seem like you would have to go out of your way to shop at community stores, but luckily for us, Findlay and Hancock County are full of dozens of amazing stores stocked with great finds!

For a list of many of the locally-owned shops in your area, view our member list here.

Friends Business Source Turkey Donations

Friends Business Source leverages a customer purchase promotion to donate $500 to food banks throughout Ohio.

Customers of Friends were able to have funds donated in their company's name for turkeys purchased prior to Thanksgiving to an Ohio food bank of their choice. Their criteria only involved making a one-time purchase of $1,000 or more in Friends related product throughout November.

"I'm glad that the regular order I'd be making helped feed a deserving family this year," states Friends customer Matthew M. Morris, Client Services Manager of Progressive Medical, Inc. "Thank you, Friends, for such a wonderful and charitable way to donate this holiday season."

Friends customers requested their contributions be made to Northwest Ohio, West Ohio, Mid Ohio and Akron/Canton Food banks. The $500 was split between the four selected.

"As the need for emergency food continues to increase in our community, your gift couldn't have come at a better time," positions Linda Crowe, Development Assistant for the Mid Ohio Food Bank. "Because of the generosity of donors like you and your customers, we're making real progress in the fight against hunger. We are able to continue to strengthen the communities where we live and work."

V.P. of Sales, Betsy Hughes, recognizes the need within our Ohio communities. "Our customers' purchases and requests for donations raised over $500 for local Ohio food banks. This was the first year we tried the promotion and I'd say that we had quite a success which will lead us to continue to do this promotion annually.

HANCOCK COUNTY RED CROSS WRAPPING UP THE HOLIDAYS WITH FASHION MAKE-OVER GIVEAWAY

The Hancock County Red Cross gift wrapping booth in the Findlay Village Mall will open on Friday, Nov. 26. The Red Cross Gift Wrapping Booth will be open weekends through Dec. 12 and daily beginning Monday, Dec. 13.  Volunteers will be working until the last present is wrapped on Christmas Eve.

Customers may choose from a selection of wrapping papers and coordinating bows. It is helpful if customers can bring a box in which to wrap their package.  The gift wrapping service is offered for a donation to benefit Hancock County Red Cross services.  Services supported through this fundraiser include Disaster Relief, Health and Safety training, Blood Services and Services to Armed Forces and Military Families. The Red Cross gift wrapping booth will be located in the former location of King's Jewelers, near the service desk.

Volunteers are the key to the fundraiser's success. "Volunteering for gift wrapping is a great way to get in the holiday spirit," says Executive Director Todd James.  "We often have families and groups working together.  They have a lot of fun and they enjoy helping the Red Cross."  The Red Cross is currently signing up volunteers for all shifts. Shifts are flexible in as little as two-hour increments with two people per shift. For more information or to register as a volunteer, visit hancockredcross.org or contact Ron Rooker at (419) 422-9322 or rookerr@hancockredcross.org.

RED CROSS OFFERING BABYSITTER PLUS CAMPDURING HOLIDAY BREAK

Registrations are now being accepted for students 11-15 years old for the Babysitter PLUS Training Camp at the American Red Cross Hancock County Chapter. The three-day camp will be held Dec. 28-30, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. each day at the Red Cross office, 125 Fair St. in Findlay.

During the Babysitter PLUS Training Camp, students will learn the skills necessary to provide safe, quality child care, including an understanding of the child development process, basic first aid, leadership skills, good decision making, care and feeding of infants and children and how to respond in an emergency. Also, students will receive training in advanced care skills including Standard First Aid and Child/Infant CPR .

At the end of camp, students will be Certified American Red Cross Babysitters and also will be certified in Red Cross Standard First Aid and Child/Infant CPR. Each student will receive a babysitter's portfolio, which includes a first aid kit, flashlight and space for his or her training manuals. During the camp, students also will build a babysitter's kit, which includes first aid items, inexpensive toys and games and activity books.

Mandy Daniel, the course Instructor, says another item students receive contains all the resources they need to run a babysitting business. "Each student will receive a CD-Rom with all of the materials contained in the Babysitter Training course and materials needed to create their own babysitter business. The disc includes a business card template, a babysitter organizer, business forms, consent and contact forms, a résumé template, a safety inspection checklist, games and activities. This is a great resource for babysitters and their parents who want to help them learn to be responsible for their own business."  She says the three-day camp will give students more time for hands-on practice of the skills they are learning and fun activities that they can use in their babysitting business.

Cost for the camp is $50 and registration is limited to 12 students. Each student will need to bring a lunch, a drink and an infant-size doll or stuffed animal to class each day. For information and registration, visit www.hancockredcross.org or call 419-422-9322 ext. 225.
