Secor Scholarship Applications now being accepted

United Way of Hancock County's Foundation will be accepting 2011 Secor Scholarship applications from now until 5 p.m., Dec. 1.  This $2,000 renewable scholarship was established as a memorial to the generosity of the Steven and Doris Secor bequest.  It is awarded to a high school senior or high school graduate living in Findlay or Hancock County who plans to attend an accredited institution of higher learning to pursue any undergraduate field of study, full time in the subsequent academic year.  The candidate must exhibit a strong emphasis on volunteerism, community service and service-learning which will be evaluated through their leadership, character, and service experience.  The student is also required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.5.

Students related to anyone on the Secor Scholarship Selection Committee or United Way of Hancock County paid staff are not eligible to apply.  Scholarship money is to be applied toward tuition, in the name of the scholar, and will be paid directly to his/her educational institution in one lump sum payment upon confirmation of student's enrollment.

The United Way of Hancock County Foundation designates a Secor Scholarship selection committee which will be composed of 3 to 4 community members who will evaluate applicants, interview finalists, and select the recipient for the Secor Scholarship. One new scholarship is awarded per year, which is renewable by the recipient, contingent upon satisfying the conditions of the renewal clause.

The entire application must be completed electronically through the United Way of Hancock County's Web site.  Interested students must go to http://liveunitedhancockcounty.org and click on the "Secor" tab.  Paper applications or references will not be accepted.  Students should review the process and prepare the required items before beginning the submission process.

Guidance counselors are encouraged to review the process in order to assist students. For additional guidance, contact Bev Phillips, community services director at bphillips@uwhancock.org or 419-423-1432.

RED CROSS AND COMMUNITY FOUNDATION JOIN FORCES  FOR DISASTER PREPAREDNESS PROJECT

The American Red Cross Hancock County Chapter announced today that it will launch a new, three-year community disaster preparedness project in January. The Hancock County Disaster Readiness Project will receive $64, 740 over three years from the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation.

Red Cross Executive Director, Todd James, says the Disaster Readiness Project will have two components. The first component is community disaster education and awareness. "We'll be offering free Be Red Cross Ready trainings throughout Hancock County, teaching families, schools, businesses and organizations the three steps of disaster preparedness: Get A Kit, Make A Plan, Be Informed. The more prepared someone is before a disaster, the better the outcome will be when disaster strikes."

The second component of the project will be the formation of the Hancock County Disaster Response and Recovery Collaborative. "What we learned from the floods of 2007 and 2008 was that we need a better system for ensuring that agencies are working together to deliver services and assistance and help the community recover as quickly and effectively as possible" says James.  For registration or information, visit www.hancockredcross.org or call the Hancock County Red Cross at 419-422-9322.
