GreaterFindlayInc. and Benton Ridge Telephone Company Submit Hancock County Broadband Connectivity Grant

GreaterFindlayInc.'s Technology Infrastructure Committee (TIC), Benton Ridge Telephone Company and local municipalities have worked collaboratively to submit a grant proposal to enhance broadband connectivity throughout Hancock County.

The $175,000 Rural Utilities Service Technical Assistance Grant would provide funds for a specialized economic development study. The results of the in-depth review will directly impact our region's ability to expand broadband and other critical infrastructure, facilitating local entrepreneurship and implementing regional economic and community development strategies. The research area includes the towns and villages of McComb, Van Buren, Arcadia, Vanlue, Mt. Blanchard, Arlington, Rawson, Mt. Cory and Jenera.

As a direct result of this study, the TIC and other supporting agencies recognize that not only new job creation opportunities result, but our region will strengthen its business attraction, retention and expansion efforts as well.  The wealth created by these new and expanded jobs along with the related investment will lay the foundation for self-sustaining, redeveloping, and thriving rural communities.

For more information about the grant or GreaterFindlayInc. and the Technology Infrastructure Committee, call  419-422-3313 or visit www.greaterfindlayinc.com

Owens Community College Harnesses Solar Energy

Team 11
FINDLAY, OH - Owens Community College will soon be harnessing the sun's energy in addition to generating wind power as the academic institution announces plans for the installation of the first solar array on the Findlay-area Campus. Both alternative energy resources will be installed concurrently in late June.

The solar array will be used for educational training within Workforce and Community Services' Photovoltaic Installation Program as well as for future academic curriculum programming in the School of Technology. Both alternative energy resources will be located adjacent to the College's Community Education and Wellness Center.

"The installation of a state-of-the-art solar array to complement the new wind turbine brings alternative energy education to the forefront in the Hancock County region," said Dr. Michael Bankey, Owens Vice President of Workforce and Community Services. "Owens Community College is committed to providing students access to innovative learning opportunities and expose the surrounding communities to the growing fields of solar and wind power."

The 1.7-kilowat solar array will feature eight panels and be used for hands-on learning as well as to convert sunlight into electricity for regular operational purposes within the Community Education and Wellness Center. Photovoltaic cells within each panel will absorb the sun's rays and create a current of power which will be directed to an inverter. The inverter will then convert the DC voltage, produced by the panels, to AC voltage.

According Bankey, the new solar array on Findlay-area Campus will be different than the alternative energy technology located on the Toledo-area Campus in order to showcase different renewable energy equipment and installation techniques for students.

"The solar array on the Findlay-area Campus will feature a small inverter for each solar module, which is an innovative installation technique. The other solar array design uses a single inverter for an entire group of solar panels," explained Bankey. "Owens is planning to offer the new Findlay-area Campus Photovoltaic Installation Program to area residents in the coming months."

Individuals attending Owens' Photovoltaic Installation Program will receive instruction within the areas of electricity and photovoltaic systems and theory. Course content includes system sizing and construction, codes and standards, interconnection safety, troubleshooting, and maintenance. Installation practices related to project management, adapting mechanical and electrical design, and system commissioning are also highlighted.

In addition, the hands-on course will include the design and installation of a grid-tied photovoltaic system and maintenance on the new solar array system at the College's Findlay-area Campus. Various inverters, photovoltaic modules, batteries and data information systems will also be installed and operated as part of the class.

Students successfully completing the Photovoltaic Installation Program will qualify to test for the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioner (NABCEP) PV Entry Level Certificate of Knowledge program. With additional work experience students will qualify to take the national certification test as a photovoltaic system installer. Superior Energy Solutions LLC in Ottawa will oversee the process of installing both the new solar array and the wind turbine.

One of the fastest-growing higher educational institutions in Ohio, Owens Community College is a fully accredited two-year, state-assisted institution of higher education that has served Northwest Ohio since 1965. United Way Seeking Volunteer Team Captains
Each year, the United Way of Hancock County sets out to raise funds for approximately 39 programs managed by 17 partner agencies. This effort is overseen by a team of local volunteer leaders who manage divisions of nearly 100 volunteers including team captains, workplace chairs, and other volunteers.
United Way of Hancock County is currently seeking volunteers for short term duties, to take place between mid-August and mid-October. The volunteer position of team captain is in place to assist local leaders in distribution of United Way materials. This is an opportunity for community-minded individuals to serve Hancock County in a very important role.  The volunteer requires interaction with small to large local business professionals as well as merchants and self-employed individuals. It is an ideal volunteer job for anyone from young professionals who wish to learn more about the community, to retirees who wants to stay engaged. Training and guidance will be provided prior to delivery of materials.  If interested, please contact United Way of Hancock County at 419-423-1432 or email Michael Momany, resource development director at Momany@uwhancock.org

Library to Host Grant Database Training
The Findlay-Hancock County Public Library will host a training session titled "Foundation Directory - Introduction to Finding Funders" on Tuesday, June 22 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. in the large meeting room at the library. The session will introduce participants to Foundation Directory Online (FDO), a searchable, user-friendly database of nationwide grant opportunities.
Participants can register for this training session online at www.findlaylibrary.org or by calling 419-
422-1712. This training is free and open to the public.  With FDO, individuals can search for foundations that support specific programs, organizations, geographic areas, and many other criteria. Participants will learn how to create customized searches to develop lists of prospective foundation and corporate donors that will match their nonprofit organization's funding needs.
The FDO database is updated continually and provides the most accurate details available on
nearly 100,000 foundations, corporate giving programs, and grant-making public charities in the
U.S.; a database of over 3,700 sponsoring companies, offering a quick pathway to corporate
funders; a database of over 1.9 million recently awarded grants; and a keyword-searchable
database of nearly 650,000 recently filed IRS Forms 990 and 990-PF.
Local FDO access was made possible by the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation,
which funded the two-year subscription as part of their capacity-building initiative aimed at
strengthening local nonprofit organizations. Previously, the closest access points for this database
were in Lima and Toledo. Having FDO available in Findlay will be an especially valuable resource
for our community, with the potential to help bring in additional funding for local organizations and
programs.
Database access is free and open to the public at the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library.
Library reference desk staff will provide the required password to access FDO on a library
computer and any support users may need.

The Department of Energy
The Department of Energy is working tirelessly to address the oil spill in the Gulf. At the request of President Obama, Secretary Chu traveled down to Houston to work closely with a team of top scientists from academia and the U.S. government, with support from more than 200 personnel from DOE's national laboratories, to analyze the response efforts and recommend additional options for stopping the leaking oil.
We'd like you to share your ideas on how to stop or contain the oil spill and mitigate its impact on the environment. The Deepwater Horizon Response has an online form available to collect your suggestions here: http://www.horizonedocs.com/artform.php
As small business owners, you know that innovation comes from many sources. We need to tap into the spirit of American entrepreneurship to learn as much as possible. So far over 20,000 ideas have been sent to BP since the Gulf of Mexico incident from oil industry experts, small businesses, and everyday Americans.
The online form, entitled "Alternative Technology Response," collects detailed information about your idea, including the materials, equipment and resources required to put your idea into action. Your idea, once you fill out the form, will go to a team of 30 technical and operational BP personnel for evaluation
Submit your ideas here.
We encourage you to be part of the solution and submit any ideas you have to the Deepwater Horizon Response, and to share this message with others who might be able to help.

HANCOCK COUNTY RED CROSS PROVIDES MUTUAL AID TO HOYTVILLE HOME FIRE
The American Red Cross Hancock County Chapter provided aid to a Wood County family following a fire in their Hoytville home on Tuesday evening, June 8.  One of the residents, who was treated and released at Blanchard Valley Hospital, was given financial assistance to provide for clothing, shoes and food.

Executive Director Todd James says the Hancock County Chapter responded to a request for mutual aid from the Wood County Chapter of the Red Cross.  "With the residents being transported to Blanchard Valley Hospital and with the majority of Wood County's volunteers still working on the relief operation for those affected by the tornadoes in Lake Township, they asked us if we could handle the case.  Of course we were glad to respond and offer help to the family" says James.  James and Terri Glick of the Hancock County Chapter's Disaster Action Team answered the call for help.  "We'll continue to work with the family for their immediate needs and then help the Wood County office in providing information and referral resources for their long term recovery."

All Red Cross disaster relief is provided free of charge, thanks to the generosity of the American people.  If you'd like to make a donation to the Hancock County Red Cross Disaster Relief fund, visit www.hancockredcross.org or call (419) 422-9322.

Owens Board of Trustees Names Dr. Larry G. McDougle President
PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP, OH - Owens Community College Board of Trustees has ended its presidential search and selected Dr. Larry G. McDougle to serve as the academic institution's new President. Dr. McDougle has been serving as the College's Interim President since January of this year.

The Board of Trustees approved Dr. McDougle's appointment as the fifth President in the 45-year history of Owens Community College during their regular June meeting. Both the Board of Trustees and Dr. McDougle have agreed to a one-year contract.

According to Owens Community College Board of Trustees Chair Dee Talmage, the Presidential Search Committee was planning to reconvene in June to review additional applications, however, after receiving overwhelming feedback from the College's campus community as well as community members in support of Dr. McDougle and his leadership the decision was made to end the search.

"During the past six months, Dr. Larry McDougle's leadership and experience has been integral in bringing the Owens Community College campus community together and moving the academic institution forward during challenging times," stated Board of Trustees Chair Talmage.

She added, "The Northwest Ohio region as well as the state and country are currently experiencing economic hardship and instability that has not been seen in decades, which has thrust the role of higher education into the national spotlight. Colleges and universities must continue to adapt to the changing times in order to prepare a highly trained and highly skilled workforce. Dr. McDougle is well-respected among educational and community leaders nationwide and is committed to the College's mission of serving our students. He is passionate about making a difference in the lives of others and the right person to lead Owens Community College."
