OFFICIAL 2009 SMALL BUSINESS PARTNERS

Pick Three. Spend $50. Save our Local Economy.350 project

Which three local businesses would you miss if they closed their doors? Maybe it's a restaurant where you can grab the best sandwiches in town. Perhaps it's the boutique down the street where you can always find that perfect gift. Or, is it your own small businesses that could use a boost?

The 3/50 Project can help.

Founder Cinda Baxter, a Minneapolis-based retail consultant, began the project early in 2009 with a short blog post. Her idea was simple: if half of the employed U.S. population chose three locally owned independent businesses they would hate to lose, and then spent a combined total of $50 a month with them, it would have a major impact-generating an estimated $42.6 billion of revenue annually. Now, that idea has quickly become an international movement to support locally owned business - The 3/50 Project.

"No one has talked this through with consumers," Baxter says. "The experts all talk in terms of macro or microeconomics-not how consumers talk to each other over the dinner table. We simply say, 'Here's the impact.' It really resonates that even a small amount of spending can make a big difference."

According to The Project, for every $100 spent in locally owned stores, $68 remains in the local economy through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. In contrast, only $43 of every $100 remains local when spent in national chains, and little or no local revenue results from online purchases. That is a lot of money staying right where you live, work and play every day.

GreaterFindlayInc. has chosen to support and promote this cause, and asks that you and your organization consider doing the same. It's easy to become involved:

  • Log onto www.the350project.net, and sign up to listed as an official partner - great publicity - and we'll put your organization's name on our website as well!

  • Browse the online library of free resources - including everything from window clings and PSAs, to logos and flyers. Inform your customers and associates about the impact they can make.

  • Follow The 3/50 Project on Twitter at @cindabaxter and use its hashtag, #350proj, or visit them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/The350Project. Create buzz and spread the news.

  • Shop at locally-owned stores, eat at independent restaurants and use local services: Remember - Pick three, spend $50 and save our local economy.
Each local purchase supports the Findlay·Hancock Community, strengthens our economy and helps our friends and neighbors that own those businesses. You can begin your search for local merchants with GreaterFindlayInc,'s Chamber of Commerce Member Directory online by clicking here.

Join us in strengthening our community. Think before you spend - buy local and help us support The 3/50 Project!
Your Prompt Business Mail Service is at Risk
Mail
Have you mailed a letter recently? Sent out invoices? Paid a bill? Until now, Findlay residents and organizations have enjoyed prompt postal delivery, and reduced bulk mailing rates. But, according to the 458 Regional Postal Task Force, that may be about to change.

Recently, the U.S. Postal Serviced began an Area Mail Processing (AMP) study to investigate the feasibility of moving the mail cancelling and processing now done at the Lima Mail Processing Center to the Toledo Processing Center to reduce expenses. If approved, this move would impact the mail service and costs for all 75 local post offices in the nine-county 458 zip code region within the next six months.

The negative effects of this shift, including an additional daily mail transportation of 160 miles round-trip, would be far reaching. All bulk mail users would face an increase of up to 4 cents per piece of mail sent, and deliveries would shift from a "next day" service standard to a 2 day standard with potential delays of 3 days for those on the southern end of the region.

The 458 Regional Postal Task Force was formed by businesses and community and political leadership in the counties impacted by the possible consolidation. The members of the Task Force believe that the Lima Mail Processing Center is an efficient, cost effective, self-sustaining government operation, and that its services should be available to all residents now and in the future. The Lima Center, which employs 115, is centrally located between Toledo, Columbus, Dayton and Fort Wayne, and currently holds a first place ranking out of 268 processing centers the U.S. Postal Service operates nationally.

GreaterFindlayInc. would like to encourage Findlay area residents to become involved, and make a difference for this and the dozens of other affected communities. The postal officials charged with making this decision will respond to the voices of their customers, and there are many ways to help. Spreading the word, writing letters, making phone calls and attending Task Force meetings can truly make a difference. GFI President and CEO Ray De Winkle has sent letters in support of the Task Force on behalf of GreaterFindlayInc., and we would like to urge you and your organization to do the same.

The 458 Regional Task Force meets every Friday at 9:30 AM in the Center for Business Services, 144 South Main Street in Lima in the conference room in Suite 200. For more information, visit www.458postaltaskforce.com.

REAL CHRISTMAS TREES ARE NATURALLY SUPERIOR

MT. CORY, OH -- In a time when Americans are placing more emphasis on environmental stewardship than ever before, a growing number of people are discovering the numerous environmental benefits of choosing a real Christmas tree that is naturally superior to the alternative.

Christmas tree farms around the state are planting thousands of trees every year, and with those trees come a host of environmental benefits. The vast majority of Christmas trees purchased in this country come from a farm where growers plant one to three seedlings for each tree harvested. Close to half a billion trees are currently growing on U.S. tree farms.

After the season, Christmas trees can be recycled for use as mulch, fish and wildlife habitat and for controlling stream bank erosion. In sharp contrast, plastic, petroleum-based artificial Christmas trees never biodegrade, and after their useful life likely go to a landfill.

Whether it is a chance to spot some wildlife, take a deep breath of fresh oxygen from the trees, or simply spend some time on a farm with family, a real Christmas tree is clearly the naturally superior and enjoyable choice this holiday season.
