Macklin Institute Offering "Common Childhood Illness" Training
Findlay, OH - The Marilyn & Gordon Macklin Intergenerational Institute (Macklin Institute) is offering a professional development in-service on "Common Childhood Illness" for child care providers on Thursday, October 8, 2009 and Friday, October 9, 2009. The training will be held in the Julien A. Faisant Center located at Birchaven Village, 15100 Birchaven Lane, Findlay, Ohio. Participants may choose to attend the refresher session on October 8, from 6-9 p.m. or the entire training on October 8 & 9, 6-9 p.m. both evenings. Findlay, OH - 10/1/09 -Andrea Kramer Fetterman, Vice President of City Apparel in Findlay, Ohio was an award recipient for the Northwest Ohio and Southwestern Michigan region of the 20 Under 40 Leadership Recognition Program. Celebrating its 14th year, the national 20 Under 40 program spotlights young, dynamic leaders who excel in community involvement and professional experience, under the age of 40.
More than 100 eligible candidates for the 20 Under 40 Leadership Recognition Program were recognized on Wednesday, September 30 at a reception and program Fifth Third Center at One SeaGate, Toledo, Ohio.

RED CROSS RECEIVES GRANT FOR MILITARY FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAM (FINDLAY, OH, OCTOBER 1, 2009)-The American Red Cross Hancock County Chapter announced today that it has received a $37,500 grant from the Department of Defense to support programs and services directed to military families in the community. In announcing the grant, Executive Director Todd James also announced that Nichole Coleman, Blood Services Director for the Chapter has been named as Coordinator of Service to Military Families. Coleman is a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving seven years as a military police specialist and public relations specialist.
The Chapter's Service to Military Families program will provide support to meet the needs of immediate family members of active duty, National Guard and reserve personnel as well as families of veterans. James says, "we've been laying the groundwork for our Service to Military Families program for several months, waiting on the funding to be available. Now that we've secured this grant, we want to serve the military families in our community as soon as possible."
The grant also provides funding for:
ˇ Monthly Military Family Network Meetings that will feature programs and speakers chosen by the families in the Network
ˇ A computer and camera to provide live "video chats" for military families and service members
ˇ Equipment and materials to present programs for military families and the community about Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces activities
ˇ Support for working with other local agencies and veterans organizations to create a local resource directory for military families
ˇ Other programming and informational activities

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR RED CROSS PARENT/CHILD
AND PRE-SCHOOL SWIM LESSONS (FINDLAY, OH, OCTOBER 12, 2009) The American Red Cross Hancock County Chapter is accepting registrations for Parent and Child and Pre-School Swim and Safety lessons to be held in the pool at Birchaven Village beginning October 29.
Classes will be held on Thursday evenings, 6:00-6:30pm for four weeks, October 29 - November 19. Cost for the course is $25. Class size is limited and pre-registration is required by October 22.

KEEP ACTIVE, STAY HEALTHY SKATING LESSONS The City of Findlay recreation department has announced new ice skating programs for adults and toddlers beginning October 13, 2009.
Adult only public ice skate sessions will be held Tuesday thru Friday 11am - 1pm in Huntington Bank Arena at the CUBE, 3430 North Main Street. Admission is $5, which includes skate rental if applicable. Showers and locker room facility will be open during adult sessions.
In addition "mom and me" ice-skate sessions from 10am - 11am Tuesday thru Friday. Admission is $3 for adult and $2 per child, skate rental included in admission price. All pre-school children must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or above.
WE Skate - Learn to skate mini camps - weekend learn to skate camp beginning October 17th. The instructive session consist of a Saturday and Sunday for beginner to advanced skaters, age 5 years or above. Each 50-minute session will have one on one time with trained instructors, from basic to advanced skills. Registration forms are available at the CUBE or at www.findlayohio.com

RED CROSS WILDERNESS FIRST AID - VITAL TRAINING FOR SPENDING TIME IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS
(FINDLAY, OH, OCTOBER 1, 2009) For hunters, backpackers, Boy Scouts and anyone who works or plays in the great outdoors, an injury or illness far from help can be deadly. The American Red Cross Hancock County Chapter is offering a Wilderness First Aid and Adult CPR Course to help outdoor enthusiasts and workers prepare for any emergency.
The course will be held Friday, November 13 through Sunday, November 15 at Camp Berry Boy Scout Camp on State Route 68 south of Findlay. Cost for the course is $100, which includes meals and cabin lodging at Camp Berry. Participants will need to bring a trail ready backpack with camping gear including sleeping bag, clothing, rain gear, eating utensils and a personal first aid kit. First Aid kits are available at the Red Cross office, 125 Fair St. in Findlay.
Rod Smith, a local Scout leader and certified Red Cross First Aid and CPR instructor will be leading the course. For registration and information, visit

RED CROSS LIFEGUARD TRINING SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER
(FINDLAY, OH, OCTOBER 23, 2009) The American Red Cross Hancock County Chapter will be holding a Lifeguard Training class on Saturdays and Sundays, November 7-22 at the University of Findlay Croy Center. All classes will be held 9:00am - 2:00pm, except for the November 7 class, which will begin at 2:00pm.
This is not a course for non-swimmers. This course is approximately 31 hours in length and includes CPR/AED for Lifeguards, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens Training.

FINDLAY HIGH SCHOOL CHALLENGE DAYS - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Findlay High School will be hosting its 4th year of Challenge Days, November 10-13, 2009 for those students in the Health classes, which are primarily sophomores. Challenge Days are powerful, high-energy programs in which youth and adult participants are guided through a series of experiential learning processes. The overall goals of the program are to increase personal power and self esteem, to shift dangerous peer pressure to positive peer support and to eliminate the acceptability of teasing, violence and all forms of oppression.
We will meet with all Facilitators for at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the program to let you know what is needed from you and to answer your questions. Our Challenge Day staff closely monitors the program and our Leaders will give all instructions throughout the day. You must be able to remain on site and participate fully for the entire program, including 30 minutes after the program at the end of the day for a post-Challenge Day debriefing.

BUCKEYE BUNDLE WINNER ANNOUNCED
(FINDLAY, OH, OCTOBER 26, 2009) The American Red Cross Hancock County Chapter announced today that Patti Cunningham of Van Buren is the winner of the Buckeye Bundle raffle. Cunningham, who works at First Federal Bank, won two tickets to the OSU/New Mexico State football game on Saturday, October 31. The tickets were donated by State Representative Cliff Hite. MARS SNACKFOOD US ISSUES ALLERGY ALERT ON UNDECLARED PEANUTS IN DOVE CARAMEL PECAN PERFECTION ICE CREAM
Mars Snackfood US announced a voluntary recall of its Dove Caramel Pecan Perfection ice cream with the lot number 931AB5YN07 because it may contain undeclared peanuts. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products. No related illnesses have been reported to date. For consumers who do not suffer from a peanut allergy or sensitivity, this product is safe to eat.
The lot number is found on the bottom of the containers. This voluntary recall is limited to this specific lot number (931AB5YN07) and was distributed only in the United States, and specifically to the following states: AL, CO, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MI, MN, NC, OH, OR, TX, UT, WA and WI. Dove Caramel Pecan Perfection is sold in a brown and gold 15.10 fl. oz. pint container and pictures a ribbon of caramel, pecans and a square of DoveŽ Brand Chocolate on the front.
The voluntary recall was initiated after Dove Caramel Pecan Perfection containing peanuts in lot number 931AB5YN07 was discovered. Mars Snackfood US was able to quickly confirm that only this lot is affected and, out of an abundance of caution, issued a voluntary recall for potentially affected containers of the ice cream. Mars Snackfood US will work with retail customers to ensure that the recalled products are not on store shelves.
