Food and Coats for Christmas Collection at Halloween ParadeBats flying

It's time once again for the annual Findlay-Hancock County Halloween Parade. Presented by the Hancock Leadership Alumni Association, this year's parade will be held Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.

Added to this year's Halloween parade will be the ability for the public to donate Coats for Christmas.  The HLAA Board will provide collection boxes for coats and mittens strategically placed at corner locations.  Volunteers manning the boxes will be provided by City Dry Cleaning Employees and area youth.  This will be a one-time collection effort before the annual collection dates in November.

HLAA will also bring back the food collection drive to the Halloween Parade for the second year.  Participants and spectators can help area food pantries as we move into the cold weather season. HLAA would like to take this opportunity to give the community a boost by using the parade as a venue for food donations. HLAA will provide a float during the parade to collect non-perishable food items from parade participants and attendees who wish to donate. For organizations or groups that wish to collect food prior to the event, the HLAA float will be available in the Marathon parking lot prior to the event to accept donations.

Registration forms are available at GreaterFindlayInc., online at www.greaterfindlayinc.com under the "events" column or can be requested via email or phone from Parade Coordinator Brian Treece at treeceb@findlay.edu or 419-424-6786.

UNITED WAY SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR GRANT REVIEW

FINDLAY, Oh - United Way of Hancock County is seeking volunteers to serve on three committees called "Impact Teams." Impact team members review grants submitted by United Way partner agencies and make recommendations to the United Way board regarding funding. There are three impact teams: health-helping people improve their health and well-being; education-helping children, youth and adults achieve their potential; income-helping families become financially stable and independent.

"This is a community process from beginning to end," said Keith DuVernay, President & CEO of United Way of Hancock County.  "We enlist the help of thousands of volunteers to raise local dollars, and we rely on volunteers to oversee the disbursement of those local dollars, as well."

Total time commitment is about 20 hours each year. Impact team members will be asked to attend 2-6 meetings from January to March, and will be reviewing community needs and the cost of providing programmatic solutions.  Funding at traditional state, federal and foundation funding sources are dwindling and as a result, United Way has become more strategic than ever in how it invests dollars back into the Hancock County community.

United Way of Hancock County uses a Web based tool to allow grant reviews to be done at any location with internet access. Tentative schedules for all meetings are provided well in advance. All impact team members attend a 2-hour training for the Web based tool. The training takes place in the first quarter of the year before grant submission and is held in the evening or on the weekend. It is recommended that each volunteer commit to a two year term, however, more than two years is encouraged and appreciated.

"These local dollars are used to fund programs and collaborations that effectively and efficiently address community needs. We need to recruit volunteers who have a desire and commitment to thoroughly review grants and programs," said Beverly Phillips, community services director.  "This is a critical role and a major volunteer opportunity. It is also a great opportunity for business exposure and corporate citizenship."

For more information, contact Bev Phillips at bphillips@uwhancock.org or 419-423-1432.

PIONEER TYKE HIKE SLATED FOR LITZENBERG

On Monday, October 5, the Hancock Park District will be hosting its annual Pioneer Tyke Hike for the public.  The hikes are slated to take place at Litzenberg Memorial Woods located off of US 224, west of Findlay.  Two sessions will be conducted, one at 10am and the other following in the afternoon at 1pm, leaving from the Gatehouse near the parking lot.

Participants will be involved with many hands-on activities throughout the program including pressing apples to make apple cider, grinding corn to make corn meal and visiting the McKinnis House where the participants will meet a living history interpreter portraying local folk of the 1840's.

Tyke Hike programs are designed for preschoolers aged 3-6 with an adult companion.  Participants are reminded to dress for weather conditions.  The cost is 50 cents per participant, payable that day on site with exact change.  For more information, contact the Hancock Park District office at 419-425-PARK.  In the event of inclement weather conditions, call the office for cancellations.

Two rounds of disc golf will be played. The first round begins at 4pm. Prizes will be awarded for the closest to the pin and the longest putt. The second round will be played after dark; beginning at 8pm. Lights will be attached to the holes and the discs, adding a new dimension to the game.
