May is National Tourism Month
The Hancock County Convention and Visitors Bureau will celebrate the 26th Annual National Travel and Tourism Week by hosting a welcome reception for its new executive director, Angela Crist, Friday May 15 at the Findlay Country Club. The reception will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. during the University of Findlay NCAA Women's Golf Championship.
 Highlighted by the national tourism theme "Travel Matters," the bureau will also be placing a series of advertisements in local publications May 9-17 to promote upcoming events and illustrate how travel benefits Findlay-Hancock County.
"Travel and tourism plays a key role in our economy," said Crist. "Our community relies on travel for tax revenue and jobs and the benefits these bring to our economy."

Applications for Hancock Leadership Due June 1 The Hancock Leadership (HL) program is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 class.
Hancock Leadership, a program of GreaterFindlayInc. and sponsored by the Hancock Leadership Alumni Association, is a nine-month seminar program designed to strengthen leadership skills, broaden knowledge of the community and motivate participants to become involved in addressing community issues.
 Since its beginning, more than 500 area leaders have graduated from Hancock Leadership, representing over 200 area businesses and/or service organizations.
The program is launched with a mandatory retreat on Saturday, August 29, 2009. This will be followed by one full-day session per month, September through May. The sessions are held on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at various locations throughout Hancock County. Class members are also required volunteer in a class service project conducted outside of regular class time.
Tuition is $795. Arrangements for payment can be made with a participant's employer and/or sponsoring organization. A limited number of scholarships are available to applicants who require financial assistance.

Hancock Leadership Position Open
The Findlay Hancock County Chamber of Commerce dba
GreaterFindlayInc. has posted a job opening for a "Hancock Leadership Director"
position effective immediately. As director, this position facilitates and
directs the Hancock Leadership and Youth Leadership programs. The position is
part-time; Leadership Alum preferred but not required. Duties include program
development and oversight; facilitation of session days and events related to
the program; liaison to the Hancock Leadership Alumni Association and Hancock
Youth Leadership Board.

PROMEDICA URGENTCARE AND OCCUHEALTH OFFERS FREE SENIOR
HEALTH EVENT-APRIL 30
A free community health event for senior citizens will be
held April 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at ProMedica UrgentCare and OccuHealth,
in the Northwest Ohio Orthopedics and Sports Medicine (NWO) Conference Center.
This event features free screenings including blood pressure
and blood sugar. Free cholesterol screenings with same-day results will be
available to the first 15 guests. In addition, the event includes health and
safety displays, fitness demonstrations, chair massages, a "brown bag
medication review" by a Walgreen's pharmacist, door prizes, give away items and
more. A box lunch will be provided to participants as well.
Registration is not required, but may be made by calling

Orthopedics and Sports Medicine campus, near Menards, at 7595 County Road 236 in Findlay.

SCIENCE BUILDING-MAY 1
The University
of Findlay will host a public
dedication and open house Friday, May 1, at its new Dr. C. Richard Beckett
Animal Science Building, located at the University's Animal Sciences
Center on State Route 68.
The outdoor ceremony will
begin at 1 p.m. Dr. C. Richard Beckett, for whom the building is named, will
offer remarks. Other speakers will include Dr. DeBow Freed, president of the
University, and Dr. F.D. McCarthy, head of the Center for Equine and
Pre-Veterinary Studies at UF.
Self-guided tours, with
students stationed within the barn to answer questions, will be held from 1-4
p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Friday, and from 9 a.m. - noon Saturday.
The new building is an
attractive, efficient, high-quality, 31,000-square-foot learning environment.
With two 50-seat classrooms, a laboratory, a pharmacy, a student lounge, locker
rooms, offices, instructional demonstration areas, holding pens and other
animal servicing areas. In addition to classrooms on site, the new barn offers
many benefits the old barn lacked. Automatic waterers were installed in pens,
and there are working chutes to move livestock, heated rooms for animals that
are sick or giving birth, and a heated bucket washing room to ensure proper
washing of equipment.

On Friday, May 1, 2009, Findlay Service League will host a
Cinco de Mayo Party at the Findlay Country Club at 7 p.m. Admission is $35 per

in the ticket price.
There will be a variety of fun events such as a chance to
break open a piñata filled with cash and a silent auction. The winner of the

HPD TO HOST 13TH ANNUAL FISH FESTIVAL-MAY 2
Young anglers can try their luck as the Hancock Park
District hosts its annual Youth Fishing Event, 8-11 a.m., Saturday, May 2 at Giertz Lake
in Riverbend Recreation Area. The event is being hosting in cooperation with a
trout stocking courtesy of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
The event is open to all interested youth, 5 - 13 years of
age, and must be accompanied by an adult (at least 18 years of age). Registration
begins at 7:30 a.m. All state fishing rules and regulations must be
followed and anglers are asked to take home the first five trout they
catch. No catch and release, permitted. Live bait will be for sale
on site, provided by P & A Tackle.
Throughout the morning, registered participant names will be
drawn for random prize drawings. Food and drink concession will also be
available by the Findlay Area Civitan Club in shelter 4.
Riverbend Recreation Area is located on TR 208, off SR 568

More than 730 students
will graduate from The University of Findlay during spring commencement
ceremonies at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, in the Koehler Center
on campus.
More than 300 graduate
degrees will be awarded, and more than 380 undergraduate degrees will be
awarded, including approximately 60 bachelor of arts degrees and approximately
320 bachelor of science degrees.
More than 40 associate of
arts degrees will be conferred. Dr. James D. Houdeshell,
professor emeritus at The University of Findlay, will give the commencement
address.
The University's
traditional Arch Ceremony will immediately follow commencement at approximately
3:30 p.m. at the Griffith Memorial Arch.

AND FMLA EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR-MAY 6
On May 6, 2009, the
attorneys of the Labor & Employment Practice Group of Eastman & Smith
Ltd. will present a free educational seminar consisting of two distinct
sessions:
Managing
Workers' Compensation Claims, 9:00-11:30 a.m. and Current Developments with the
Family Medical Leave Act, 12:30-3:00 p.m. Attendees may attend one or both of
the sessions.
The morning
session is designed to provide business owners, executives, human resource
professionals, disability program managers, and supervisors with a vital
understanding of how the Ohio Workers' Compensation System functions and how
conscientious management of workers' compensation claims can help reduce costs
and premiums.
The afternoon
session provides attendees with an overview of the new FMLA regulations and
instruction on how to properly implement FMLA leave with workers' compensation,
ADA, and other
types of leave. The panel will clarify
the responsibilities of the employer and employees, offer guidance on how to
prevent employee misuse of FMLA leave, and instruct employers on how to
properly implement the requirements of the new regulations while avoiding
litigation.

HPD IS NOW ACCEPTING SUMMER DAY CAMP REGISTRATION
The Hancock Park District is offering exciting and
educational opportunities for youth, ages 6-15 years old. From exploring the
outdoors to recreating pioneer life, Summer Day Camp participants will be
immersed in fun hands-on activities that will enrich their summers. Camp
registrations are now being accepted at the HPD office, located on 1424 E. Main Cross Street, Findlay. Space is limited, so register
early.
Registration forms are available at the HPD office or can be
downloaded from the HPD website. Camp fee is required at the time of
registration. No refunds will be given, except in the event of camp
