Community Task Force Formed to Keep Cooper in Findlay

The threat of our local Cooper Plant closing is something GreaterFindlayInc. and our community are taking very seriously.  A Community Task Force led by GreaterFindlayInc. is working to do everything possible to retain the Cooper Plant here in Findlay.

Incoming GFI President and CEO Ray De Winkle is involved with the efforts, despite not taking office until November 17.

"As a newcomer to the area, I am impressed with the unified focus of both the public and the private sector," said De Winkle.

The Community Task Force has representation from City/County Government, Regional and State Offices and a number of other profit and not-for-profit offices. This group of community leaders is working collaboratively to present a proposal to Cooper's Corporate Office by Dec. 1.

"It is evident that Cooper Tire and this community have a long and strong history. The Task Force is very serious about retaining that relationship and we are all focused on presenting a proposal to the Cooper Corporate Office to protect that partnership," said De Winkle.

Cooper Tire along with Marathon Oil and Whirlpool Corporations are the three major business cornerstones for Findlay/Hancock County.

GFI Chairman of the Board, Randy Lohoff assures, "The Community Task Force is doing everything reasonably possible to present a proposal that will allow the Findlay Cooper plant to stay here.   We recognize the challenges in these rough economic times but our Committee is focused on presenting a strong case to keep this significant employer in Findlay."

For questions, contact the GFI office at 419-422-3313.  We appreciate your interest in this very critical matter.

Membership Vote Adds Four to GFI Board of Directors

In a special meeting of the membership held on November 4, 2008, Section 2 of Article IV of GreaterFindlayInc.'s ("GFI") Code of Regulations was amended to implement the following:

The Board of Directors shall consist of twenty-one (21) voting members which includes GFI's Immediate Past Chairperson, GFI's Treasurer, Mayor of the City of Findlay, one (1) Hancock County Commissioner, and one (1) City of Findlay Councilperson as designated by Findlay City Council. GFI's Immediate Past Chairperson shall serve for a term of one (1) year.

GFI Board Member, Lynn Child noted that the amendment will allow for broader representation from the GreaterFindlayInc. membership. "Going into 2009, the change will help maintain consistency, institutional knowledge and leadership for incoming president, Ray De Winkle," said Child.

Nominations for the GFI Board of Directors can be submitted at any time of the year.  Generally the process officially kicks off every year in August.  Terms range from one to three years.

Those interested in submitting a nomination can contact Dionne Neubauer at 419-422-3313 or email dneubauer@greaterfindlayinc.com.
Findlay Experiencing Lowest Cost of Living Since 2004

Despite the current economic conditions, the City of Findlay continues to be an affordable place to live. According to the third quarter 2008 American Chamber of Commerce Research Association (ACCRA) Cost of Living Index, Findlay residents are experiencing the most affordable third quarter relative price levels for consumer goods and services in four years. The 2008 third quarter composite index of 94.8 is down 3.8 percent from the 2007 third quarter composite index of 98.6.  The 2006-2004 third quarter composite indexes were 97.9, 98.9 and 101.3, respectively.

In comparison to its neighbor, Lima, Ohio, Findlay's cost of living was 1.4 percent lower than Lima's 96.2 composite index.

In a national comparison, the City of Findlay's composite index for grocery items were 105.1; housing 75.6; utilities 105.2; transportation 100.5; healthcare 98.6; and 102.8 for miscellaneous goods and services.

The Index is based on the six preceding components. Prices covering almost 60 different items are collected quarterly by chambers of commerce, economic development organizations or university applied economic centers in each participating urban area.

Compiled and published quarterly by The Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER), GreaterFindlayInc. was among the 315 urban areas participating in the Index which measures regional differences in the cost of consumer goods and services, excluding taxes and non-consumer expenditures, for mid-management lifestyles in participating areas.

The average for all participating places in each quarter equals 100 and each participant's index is read as a percentage of the average for all places. However, small differences should not be construed as significant-or even as indicating correctly which area is the more expensive. The index does not measure inflation.

Networking = Giving Help
Networking Tips from Debby Peters, CNP Guru, debby@certifiednetworker.com

Recently I was chatting with a job-seeker who relayed that she didn't feel very good about networking.  "It just seems so fake," she said. "I'm acting friendly, when really I only want a job."

I asked her if she ever helped people in the past and how giving to others made her feel.  She smiled and said, "I like helping people."

And so does everyone else! If you are kind enough to offer help to someone, you should welcome any assistance that is given in return.  That's what networking is all about. Our world exists because of the balance of giving and getting.  No matter whether you are a job-seeker or employed, allow your acquaintances to invest in your success by accepting a little help.  It just makes good networking sense.

So, at the net Fresh Brewed Business, December 9 at the Findlay Country Club, remember that networking is the work of both giving and receiving.
