| OWENS OFFERS NEW PUBLIC SAFETY
SUPERVISOR TRAINING PROGRAM
Northwest
Ohio public safety officials and first responders interested in expanding their
supervisory knowledge and skills are invited to participate in a new Public
Safety Supervisor Training Program at the Owens Community College
Findlay-area Campus. The program begins Sept. 10 and will continue through Nov.
5.
The program
will be offered through Owens' Community and Corporate Education on Wednesdays
from 6-9 p.m. in the College's Community Education and Wellness Center.
Owens' Findlay-area Campus is located on Bright Road in Findlay.
The
nine-week Public Safety Supervisor Training Program will feature seven learning
modules that cover supervisory topics specific to the field of public safety
and emergency preparedness. Topics covered in the supervisory course will
include supervisory management roles and challenges, fundamentals of planning
and time management, decision making and problem solving, fundamentals of
organizing, communication, motivation, leadership, exercising control, coaching
for higher performance, meeting and facilitation skills, and labor relations,
among other areas. In addition, attendees will receive the latest content and
methods based upon "real world" experiences of public safety officials and
first responders.
The
registration fee for the class is $167 and space is limited. For more

HANCOCK COUNTY FARM
TOUR-SEPT. 13
The Hancock
County Farm Tour 2008 will be held on Saturday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to 5
p.m.
Held every
four years since 1970, the Farm Tour 2008 includes stops at diverse agriculture
businesses. There are locations that feature traditional farms including those
that raise grain, hogs, cattle and sheep.
Spend a day
in the country that's both fun and educational for your whole family. You
can visit any or all of the nine different stops along the 32-mile round-trip
route through Hancock
County. Along the
way, you'll learn about the number one industry in the county AGRICULTURE!
There will be lots of fun, hands-on kids activities at each stop.
Stops
include: University
of Findlay Center for Pre-Vet
and Equine Studies, Creekview Dairy Farm, Bateson Farms, Inbody Brothers Farm,
Llama Nation Farm, Old Homestead Farm, Serpent Mound Farm, Kaleidscope Farms,
Biery Family Stock Farm.

PLAY DISC GOLF AT NIGHT-SEPT 13
Everyone
can join in some "Frisbee" fun and win numerous prizes at this Disc Golf
Community Association event. The Mid-Fall Disc Golf Tournament is scheduled
for Saturday, September 13, starting at 4 p.m. in shelter #4 at Riverbend
Recreation Area. Players can join in two rounds of disc golf with prizes being
awarded in each division. Add $5 to the Ace Pool for a chance to win a cash
prize. If no one wins the Ace Pool, the balance of the pool will carry over to
the next tournament. Current Ace Pool balance is $130.
Two rounds
of disc golf will be played. Prizes will be awarded for the closest to the pin
and the longest putt. The second round will be played after dark; beginning at
8 p.m. Lights will be attached to the holes and the discs, adding a new
dimension to the game. Please purchase disc lights in advance, and bring your
own food and drinks to enjoy during the tournament.
Onsite
registration will run from 2:30 - 3:15pm with a $20 entry fee. The tournament

The Black Heritage

and the Long Term Recovery Committee, this event includes several seminars
aimed at assisting both home and business owners with preparing for the next
disaster. Session topics include: flood mitigation & preparedness;
continuation of life after a disaster, vital records; disaster response and recovery
steps; continuation of business operations planning. Workshop instructor will
be Scott Berndt, who has over 20 years experience in the fields of emergency
response, disaster response, environmental and safety.

ECLIPSE YOUTH GRANTMAKING COUNCIL
SEEKS GRANT PROPOSALS
The ECLIPSe
(Emerging Community Leaders Investing in Philanthropic Service) Youth
Grantmaking Council has announced that applications for their next round of
competitive grants are now available.
ECLIPSe is
a local youth grantmaking council comprised of students in eight grade through
college. The youth council reviews grant proposals, meets with applicants, and
awards grants that fund high-quality youth-driven service learning projects in Findlay and Hancock
County. Grant funds are
raised by the youth members through fundraising efforts and private donations.
Area youth,
schools, and youth-serving organizations who are interested in submitting a
grant proposal can receive more information and an application packet by
contacting Kimberly Bash, Youth
Services Officer and ECLIPSe Coordinator, at (419) 425-1100 or online at
www.community-foundation.com. The deadline for proposals is October 10,
2008. The grantmaking council currently
has $2,500 available for service learning projects. ECLIPSe requires that funded projects be
coordinated in partnership with local youth and that they address actual
community needs through service learning.

Voices for
Children of Court Appointed Special
Advocates of Hancock County (CASA) are ordinary people doing
extraordinary work for abused and neglected children. Volunteers are accepted
from all cultures, professions, ethnic and educational backgrounds.

Children will be holding informational meetings for those who would like to
know more about becoming a Court Appointed Special Advocate. Meeting dates are

Bldg. - above the emergency room. This support group is free and open to anyone
dealing with grief following a suicide.
Members of the group are also available for outreach to persons not yet
