Greetings to friends near and far!
The HEAL Newsletter has a little something for everyone interested in EFPL! Read about David Young's new website highlighting research in Heart Rate Variability (HRV). This measure of well-being for people and horses might have a place in EFPL research studies.
Interested in taking a HEAL workshop? Consider getting a price break for the upcoming Horse-Human Connection: 6 Keys to Personal Growth, held here at the HEAL Ranch April 20-22. Find the special offer in the article below!
For our colleagues overseas, advanced professional trainings in the UK and Norway feature the HEAL Model, a clinically reliable and justifiable model of treatment with EFPL.
Residents of the Pacific Northwest will not want to miss the Bitless Bridle clinic/demonstration (May 26, Port Townsend WA). The clinic offers educational demonstrations. Find links to the event and the product below.
As always... don't miss the "good reads and links"!
Thanks for reading! Peace and blessings. Leigh

The Horse-Human Connection: 6 Keys for Personal Growth April 20-22, 2012 at the HEAL Ranch in Chehalis, WA
Our life stories grow out of experience, but in time these stories can become our experience... keeping us stuck in old patterns that no longer fit. Learning with horses helps your brain move beyond the tendency to see what has been, to see more clearly in the here and now. Unlock old patterns and liberate your story using HEAL's Six Keys to Relationship.
About the Facilitators:
Leigh Shambo, MSW, LMHC, a licensed therapist and educator, has specialized in EFP/L for over a decade. David Young is a scientist and horse specialist (and Leigh's husband) whose work has informed and supported the HEAL Model of EFP/L. Leigh is the founder and lead therapist for Human-Equine Alliances for Learning, a non-profit charitable organization that supports equine-facilitated services and research. Leigh is regularly invited to teach and to speak throughout the US, Canada and Europe.
Say you saw it here and get 10% off!
Cost: $750 per person or $1350 per pair - lunch is provided
CEU's for counselors and therapists through NASW-WA and CA-BBS

The Launch of a New Website by David Young
When Dr. Stein (Stein PK: 103 Pub-Med papers) said to me in a casual conversation a year ago, March 2011 "Not much has been done for application of HRV for individuals", I was disappointed but I quickly resolved to search for individual applications of HRV that would give me self management and perhaps clinical opportunities in our EFPL services at HEAL.
What is HRV (heart rate variability)? I call it: a window into the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Healthy hearts have lots of variability and flexibility in their beat-to-beat rhythm. Stress load from all sources (including emotional stress) will show up in this measure - if we can track it with sufficient accuracy and reliability.
Interestingly, this measure can be as valid for horses as it is for people, making it potentially useful for EFPL research.
HRVreseach.com - This website will post the abstracts of the latest HRV studies from around the world (Pub-Med) that I believe would be appropriate for individuals, clients, clinicians & patients.
We will begin with humans and eventually include horses and the interaction of HRV between humans and and horses along the lines of HEAL. Before continuing with Humans and HRV, I will leave you one popular HRV horse article by Dr. Ross. What is as the heart of breakdowns in the racing industry: HRV. Click here for the article.

The Benefits for Horse & Rider -
The Bitless Bridle provides a humane alternative to the Bronze Age technology of the traditional bit. Your horse is free from fear, listens more attentively, breathes more freely, and moves more gracefully. With a calm, less spooky horse, communication is enhanced, trust established, performance improved, and harmony achieved. Riding and driving becomes simpler, safer and more satisfying. Both you and your horse can relax and enjoy yourselves.
The Bitless Bridle-
Although The Bitless Bridle is indisputably a bitless bridle, it bears no other resemblance to the pre-existing and traditional bitless bridles, i.e., the hackamores, bosals, and sidepulls. It works on an entirely new and different concept compared with all previous bridles. The Bitless Bridle provides, as it were, full service communication, whereas the traditional bitless bridles all have limitations in their ability to provide for rider/horse communication. The hackamores and bosals, for example, make some provision for stopping (though with similar inherent problems to the bit method) but are weak on steering, whereas the sidepulls provide for steering but are weak on stopping. Furthermore, whereas the Bitless Bridle is applicable to all disciplines, the traditional bitless bridles are not.

The Partnership-
Dr. Cook, an equine head, throat and neck specialist with 50 years of veterinarian experience, invented and developed the Bitless Bridle. He chose Mitzi Summers as his first Bitless Bridle consultant as well as a Bitless Bridle Instructor. She has helped horses and their riders learn how to develop a pain-free connection when ridden using Dr. Cook's Bitless bridle.
The basis of the workshop will be POSITIVE reinforcement with your horse, not dominance and submission but forming a true partnership. Riders and horses from all backgrounds and disciplines are welcome to participate.
Contact Summer Martell at summermartell@hotmail.com or 360-531-1726 for more information or to register.
Horse and rider participants: $50.00 (pre-registration required)
Auditors: $25.00
