upwardHEAL-LEAP Course endorsed by British Association of Counseling and Psychotherapy (BACP)

HEAL is proud to partner with one of England's premier centers for equine therapy, the LEAP Equestrian Therapeutic Center, to offer professional training courses as The HEAL-LEAP Institute of Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy & Learning(EFP/L). Leigh Shambo from HEAL, and Mike Delaney, LEAP Clinical Director / EFP therapist, will be the lead instructors for the initial course offerings in 2012; HEAL graduates Polly Burns and Ella Bloomfield will be associate instructors.

The initial course, HEAL-LEAP Institute Level I, comprised of two four-day training workshops, has been approved for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by the prestigious British Association of Counseling and Psychotherapy (BACP). The course is aimed at post-graduate professionals seeking to incorporate Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy & Learning (EFP/L) into their therapy or counseling practice. Participants will earn 58 hours CPD by enrolling in both courses, or each 28-hour course may be taken separately.

See information on the HEAL website here

Mike Delaney at LEAP-ETC

The HEAL-LEAP Institute starts 7 - 10 June 2012 with the Foundation Level four-day workshop, followed by the advanced Integration Level workshop 6 - 9 September 2012. The courses prepare participants to facilitate horse activities for experiential psychotherapy or learning, helping clients increase relational ability, emotional well-being, self-awareness and empowerment. Participants will gain CPD hours in each workshop and participants who complete both will earn a certificate of completion for HEAL-LEAP Institute Level I.

HEAL defines a therapeutic model for EFP/L, which gives the therapist a framework with a coherent and implicit structure for emotional and relational healing, which is adaptable enough to tailor for different clients' ages and clinical presentations. The model has been used and tested in clinical practice for treating complex PTSD and other clinical disorders.

see HEAL Research

The HEAL Model focuses on a working limbic bond where horse and human look for, and look out for, each other. This is a practical bond of energy and attention. It allows for subjectivity and intensely personal experiences of meaning while encouraging the reality testing that is a function of healthy ego strength. The goal is to build client capacity for emotional regulation and competencies in attachment, and to bridge these skills to human environments. This model also integrates well with other models of EFP increasing physical and emotional safety as well as clinical effectiveness.

The cost for each four-day training is £2625, which includes lunches and BACP certificate of completion. A limited number of partial scholarships, based on financial need will be available through HEAL by application.  Inquiries should be directed to HEAL Operations Manager Ricki Martin, ricki@humanequinealliance.org.

SUMMER IN WINTER

by Christine Hemp

for Summer Martell and Tankha,

leaders of our eleven-horse, full-Moon ride

January 8, 2012

The valley held its breath. First full moon

of a brand new year. No breeze or frost. Like August,
someone said. Our legs hugged our horses' bellies,
trusting we'd be ferried far across the reach
to forests filled with snags and fingered roots.
No one knew who rode behind or ahead, our bearings
only intermittent flash of grey, a splash of pinto,
palomino in the dark. A dog or two wove
through the moving legs. Each steady hoof-fall
beat our ancient bond: What code is it that calls them
to offer us their backs? To carry this woman-posse
through the wash of night, hooting at the moon?
We trotted up the scree and made it to the quarry:
Standing stones. Prehistoric shadows of a backhoe,
a rusty loader, and a cat. The horses snorted,
strained to move along, sweat dampening their fuzzy
hides. When finally we lined out into open fields,
mist rising up our legs, we hardly knew at all
where human stopped and horse began.

upwardFederation of Riding for the Disabled International Evolves

The Federation of Riding for the Disabled International (FRDI) is becoming HETI - Horses in Education and Therapy International. This organization champions research and standards for all therapeutic use of horses, including psychotherapy and other social-emotional applications.

This membership-based organization publishes the Scientific and Educational Journal of Therapeutic Horsemanship International, the same journal that published Leigh's research on the effectiveness of Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

FRDI was founded in 1980 and was created to provide a means of sharing and enhancing technical and educational expertise at the international level in the field of Therapeutic Riding.  A global organization, FRDI forms worldwide links between countries, centers and individuals offering equine facilitated activities and assists in the development of new programs worldwide.

They also offer a book titled Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy: Case Studies and International Reports.  This has proven to be a very insightful publication and a book review will be available in our next newsletter!
