"Almost Spring" Greetings from the HEAL Ranch!
Thanks for taking time to view the HEAL Winter/Spring Newsletter! We aim to inspire, educate and inform readers about the value of horses as partners in psychological healing, and in social-emotional learning. This is "Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy & Learning" or EFP/L.
We are delighted to announce the launch of our new, information-based website. Since HEAL was founded in 2000, knowledge and sophistication in the use of EFP/L has grown. HEAL is a proud contributor to this evolution, through our clinical and educational services, our research, and our elite Facilitator Training.
The new site features pages such as 'Equine Therapies Overview' and ' Research on EFP/L'. We welcome your feedback! We are keeping track of interest and suggestions. By late spring we will be posting excerpts from the draft of our upcoming book. Let us know what you think and visit us often!
This issue features the Northwest Equestrian Stewardship Center, an innovative non-profit rehabilitating rescued horses who also are employed in EFP/L programs at the Center. NWESC has an event coming up! A HEAL Facilitator graduate shares her own "journey of authenticity" and how horses helped her. You'll be amazed by "the world's smartest horse" if you haven't met him already. This is 'love in action'. Don't miss the link to the video!
Whether you are a friend of HEAL from way back, or new to HEAL and thinking, "Huh? I don't get this about therapy with horses!" please enjoy the articles in this issue, and visit our new and improved website!
Be well!
Gratitude and blessings,
Leigh

NWESC Spring Fling

Founded in 2009, the Northwest Equine Stewardship Center (NWESC) is a non-profit organization that builds mutually beneficial relationships between horses and humans by encouraging community responsibility and stewardship for all horses. Located in Snohomish, Washington, the NWESC works directly with non-profit horse rescue organizations, animal control, veterinary schools and the local community to provide veterinary care and rehabilitation for rescue horses, and educational and therapeutic opportunities for humans.
A Spring Fling fund-raising benefit event featuring Leigh Shambo, Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy & Learning specialist, will take place on March 12th, 2011 at the new NWESC facility in Snohomish. Proceeds will benefit NWESC. To learn more about Northwest Equine Stewardship Center, or to obtain details on the fundraising benefit, please visit the NWESC website.
Leigh Shambo will be giving the keynote address at this Spring Fling event March 12th at NWESC in Snohomish, WA. The following day, March 13th, will be an Equine-Facilitated Learning Demonstration Day - an all-day 'drop-in' event featuring Leigh and several HEAL-Certified Facilitators, including Eric Mueller, PhD who offers ongoing EFL services at NWESC. Mark your calendar to join us for a day of fun, learning and growth with the herd at NWESC! For specifics on the EFL Demo Day email info@nwesc.org.

Are You Authentically You? by HEAL graduate Drea Bergquist-Bowen | |
The idea of being authentic is not a new one. But I'm giving it a lot more attention lately, and I'm fascinated by the challenges we all face when working to determine who we are authentically. It makes perfect sense when you think about it.
Many children are not raised in an environment where they are truly accepted and treasured for who they are. And, I think, even if we are lucky enough to have a wonderful supportive, accepting, environment as a child, once we are exposed to outside influences, the internal turmoil of puberty and society's expectations, everything begins to change. We start shaving off the unique edges of our peg so we conform nicely into the hole that society says is acceptable.
At a lecture in Vancouver BC Dr. Christiane Northrup, MD,said that if a woman wants to get in touch with her authentic self, she has to go back to around age 9, before puberty. What did we love to do then? What made us happy? What was it we couldn't wait to spend our time doing? Who were we before our hormones and society's expectation of being female (or male) began to influence us and how we interacted with the world? (I wonder if this is true for men as well.) There seems to be universally common milestones (divorce, reaching mid-life, unexpected career change, financial catastrophe, infidelity, losing a loved one or facing a serious health crisis) that inspire us to begin to rethink who we are and who we want to be. Often, after experiencing a high magnitude life quake, we become more focused on a personal journey of discovery that leads us to accept and embrace our unique gifts and talents. My journey involved a handful of those milestones and they all hit within a window of time around turning 40. Actually, it was a full handful. The stress induced a health crisis that happened during those years. I look back and am
humbled at what humans are capable of overcoming, and the complete and utter turmoil we can survive, personally and spiritually. It was a very alive and rewarding upheaval, albeit painful. And right in the middle of all of that, I brought horses back into my life!
Not just any horses, I adopted two green broke 3 year old boys who ultimately would take me back to the 9 year old girl and reconnect me to my authenticity. But not without some challenges from my entrenched 40 +/- year old ego fighting me to maintain the comfortable status quo. I really love what Dr. Lance Secretan says about change; "We sacrifice what we are for what we can become-and that takes courage."

Lukas - Worlds Smartest Horse
| |
Lukas, the World's Smartest Horse (according to The World Records Academy) has done it!! Guinness World Records has officially recognized Lukas' history making achievement: "Most numbers correctly identified by a horse in one minute." The seventeen year old ex-racer and former rescue met all the guidelines and identified NINETEEN numbers in less than sixty seconds. Karen Murdock, Lukas' owner/trainer had quite a list for her beloved gelding during the event.
Guidelines for the attempt included the following:
- Qualified veterinary surgeon present.
- No equipment whatsoever to be used by the handler (including a halter) - Lukas loose and entirely free in a round pen.
- No touching or pointing by the handler or any other person.
- A single verbal request (a number) solely must be made by the handler.
- The numbers must be placed on the floor/table in front of the horse 20 centimeters apart.
- The horse must return toward center after each number and make a conclusive selection.
- Only correct responses are counted.
- Numbers spoken at random and non-consecutive.
- Two expert witnesses.
- Two expert time keepers with stopwatches accurate to 1/100th of a second.
- Static (non-stopping) filming of entire attempt and focused on attempt at all times.
- Still photographs documenting the above.
Once again, Hadi Khalil, veteran producer at International Production and Advertising was on hand to film this momentous occasion; IPA staff photographers and Linda Alexander Walton generously donated still pictures. Lukas' veterinarian, Dr. Don Scott Vrono, assisted with overseeing the event. Expert witnesses included Stacey Erb and Kathleen (Tat) Yakutis, timers were Chuck Erb and Doug Murdock. Dawn Mellen, President of After The Finish Line, was on hand as Lukas dedicated his attempt to benefit those less fortunate. According to Murdock, "I'm very grateful for the help of so many good friends who have helped to bring this about. We're also very fortunate to have had the support of animal lovers all over the world who have sent encouraging messages and given us inspiration. I also want to express my appreciation to Guinness for their acknowledgment of Lukas' abilities and to Guinness Talent Manager Louise Ireland for her wonderful assistance.
What's next for the Guinness World Record Holder? Lukas plans to continue to share his message of hope and happiness for all creatures. Will there be another record attempt in the future? Lukas isn't saying yet, but he is practicing identifying his shapes.

Are You Authentically You? continued...
I began working with a counselor a year or so before my horses came on the scene. I was intently working through the excitement and challenge of the horses while working on healing my history. Eventually my 'horse time' became a regular part of my discussions with my counselor. He was curious and asked me a lot of meaningful questions to try and understand why the horses were playing such a significant role in healing my life. I didn't have the explicit knowledge at that time to tell him what was happening for me - inside!
My experience was internal, an implicit knowing. I didn't have the right words to explain it to anyone. At that point in my life Equine-Facilitated Learning was living on the perimeters of my radar, however, I was very focused on improving my horsemanship skills to survive the learning curve with the boys. Looking back at where I was and remembering the challenges I faced with them, it is by their grace that we are where we are today. I had lost my connection with my sensing self, I was a stretched thin working mom of three young kids and my life revolved around the "details!"
During this time, my horses were experiencing my chaos, lack of center, left brain focus on doing and it made them uneasy to say the least. Buck Brannaman's words resonate deeply with me; "All your horses are a mirror to your soul and sometimes you might not like what you see in the mirror. Maybe there's some things you are going to learn about you! Maybe the horse is the only damn way you are going to learn it! If you can find a way to fit with this horse, to make it better, you will make it better in areas you didn't think related to horses."
I heard myself explain my passion for my horse time in surprising ways and I was taking note as the words came out of my mouth trying to justify what I was doing. I would say things like, "they force me to stay in the present, to be aware of every little detail." "Time stops for me in the moments with my horses." "It is the only time in my day when my mind is not racing to who needs to get where, what is for dinner, grocery shopping, cleaning the house, yada, yada, yada." New neural pathways were forming and my whole inner being came alive as a result of my sincere and passionate desire to have a deep, trusting relationship with my horses.
I had to change, to soften, to know my heart, trust my intuition and honor my boundaries impeccably. This has become the foundation for my life/health coaching and EFL practices. I was experiencing the profound power of Equine-Facilitated Learning, facilitated by my horses and my desire for a trusting relationship with them. Today my herd of 9 and I are working with others on their journey toward reconnecting with their authenticity and recreating their purposeful life. I could not be more fulfilled in my work!
I am incredibly grateful to Leigh, Kathleen, and David. My training at Human-Equine Alliances for Learning was rich with mentorship, hands on experience and learning about the transformative neuroscience at work in EFP/L. As a result of my journey I am living authentically and on purpose and I am passionate about working with clients on their journey to discovering the magic of the 9 year old they knew long ago. I have a card in my office that asks me daily: "Am I the woman the little girl in me always thought I would be?" Today I can say ABSOLUTELY! (Big Smile) You can be too!
"One's own self is well hidden from one's own self: Of all the mines of
treasure, one's own is the last to be dug up." Friedrich Nietzsche
