Hello to our friends far and wide,
Wow, it's November already!
Time to take a deep breath and look back over the months just past. We've had an exciting and fulfilling year, proud to be part of the increasing sophistication and understanding of EFP/L world-wide. Around the globe, horses are helping humans with emotional healing and growth. This month's Nickers come from the graduates of the 2009 HEAL Facilitator Training Program for EFL! They will return to their own corners of the world to employ the HEAL Model of EFL within their teaching and healing practices. Learn how these nine women plan to make EFL part of their path of service and livelihood.
As our history with horses through the ages shows so clearly, the horse-human bond changes both species. One of my equestrian teachers used to say, "Horses improve the human's awareness. The human can improve the horse's focus and trust. Together these improve both horse and human." At HEAL we explore the power of this synergistic relationship which teaches us so much about PLAY and SEEKING. We are happy to recommend resources for creative horse play to maximize the synergy- so be sure to check out November's Good Reads!
Thanks to all of you who reached out to us after reading our tribute to the therapy horse Galant whose life touched many of yours. We at HEAL deeply appreciated the many stories and remembrances, each of which had a place in easing our sorrow. This month we choose to print one simple poem of celebration for our friend.
By the time you read this, David and I will be travelling with our horses Beau and Dixsi to our winter site in Bishop CA. We hope to see some of you there! Check out next month's issue of the HEAL Newsletter to learn "How Mountain Trail Riding Improves Limbic Connection in Horse and Rider" by Leigh Shambo. With pictures! :)
We sincerely hope you enjoy this Newsletter and welcome your comments, suggestions and stories to share with all of our readers. Just send them to us at news@humanequinealliance.org. Wishing you Energy and Grace, Leigh

Meet the 2009 HEAL Facilitators
Human-Equine Alliances for Learning and instructors, Leigh Shambo and Kathleen Barry Ingram, proudly announce the 2009 class of graduates from the Facilitator Training Program. Nine women from around the globe successfully completed the program on October 17, 2009.
Together, Leigh and Kathleen developed this program to prepare counselors, teachers, and coaches (including equestrian professionals) with practical training and experience for developing Equine Facilitated Learning programs. The graduates learn to facilitate horse activities in a way that optimizes relational ability, emotional well-being, and empowerment. These nine individuals, with varied backgrounds and life stories, rigorously undertook the challenge to uncover hidden truths and gifts, discovering their own unique ways of presenting and teaching the HEAL Method of EFL.

When asked what the HEAL program has meant to her, Ms. de Hoop replied, "This year was life changing, I got to know myself a lot better and I became more whole. I learned to trust my intuition, my body and my inner wisdom. Horses are great healers and I learned how to facilitate this healing and hold the sacred space of possibilities. This is the most beautiful thing I have ever done. The horses in my life brought me where I am now. I'm still learning every day from the horses. Ann Glaze A small business advisor based in Kent, Washington, specializing in process improvement, service and communications, Ms. Glaze wasn't sure when she started the HEAL Facilitator Training Program how she was going to use what she learned. Now her 1,000-pound business partners can help Ms. Glaze's clients broaden their awareness and change what is not working.According to Ms. Glaze, "EFL makes such sense to me and has had a significant impact on me personally, but I was not sure how it might fit into my work as a small business advisor. I understand now that the horses allow us to see ourselves more clearly and to release patterns of behavior that hold us back. Clarity and process improvement are core principles of my business practice. What better way to help business people think about things differently than to partner them with a horse? The willingness to risk change is what this work is all about!"annglaze@mindspring.com
Robin L. Krueger
Ms. Krueger, a financial executive with Tatum Partners, LLC, is a member of the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association - NARHA and their mental health division, Equine Facilitated Mental Health Association - EFMHA. Ms. Krueger already uses the HEAL Facilitator training in her executive leadership work as part of her current consulting assignments. She intends to eventually assist individuals experiencing major physical illness as part of the programs offered at her developing facility, MapleRock Farm, in Eatonville, Washington.
When asked about the HEAL Facilitator Training Program, Ms. Krueger said, "Training in EFL facilitation enables facilitators to help others experience their own authentic self. But it begins with one's personal journey to a place of individual authenticity. The challenge of arriving and holding consciousness in that space is the greatest gift we can give one another, especially in such a demanding and rapidly changing world. It works."

"I think you have been duped..." A Skeptic's Perspective
Recently HEAL was contracted to present a 2-day corporate seminar for Centennial Contractors Enterprise, Inc. Seven men, constituting a management team within Centennial, participated in the workshop which was aimed at increasing emotional intelligence and team spirit. Can working with horses put you in touch with feelings and increase your emotional intelligence? One participant shared an email his father wrote to him prior to his participation:
(from John's Dad, prior to the 2-day event at HEAL)
"I think you have been duped on the horses and touch feely stuff..... It is just a test. I know these things. They will give you a tour of the barn (horses), hand you a shovel and have you shovel stuff all day (work with), and ask how you feel about that (feely). If you complain about it, they will tell you that your response is emotional. I think that the intelligence part comes in afterwards when you go...hmmm...I've been duped! ---- Can you see how I got so far in life?"
So... this "graduation picture" is for John's Dad!
Some actual comments from the group:
"... opened many doors for personal growth, understanding and leadership."
"I was able to go home that weekend and have the best time with my wife using some of the tools I acquired at the seminar such as Listening, Posturing, Not taking things personal, don't push buttons even though you may want to!"
"I will be more aware of the energy I put off in the office or meetings realizing it can be contagious."
"I found the class well worth the time. I feel it will have a positive impact in my business and personal life."
We thank John for sharing his father's point of view, and our thanks to all you guys for an enjoyable and memorable learning experience!
