Marking the One Year Anniversary of the Tucson Shooting

An evening candlelight vigil titled "Too Many Victims" was held Sunday, Jan. 8 at First UMC at the Chicago Temple. The event was co-sponsored by the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.

First UMC Associate Pastor, Rev. Wendy Witt delivered the welcoming words and opening prayer.

Congressmen Mike Quigley (D-IL) and Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL) attended the event and reflected on the tragic events a year ago which left their colleague Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords critically wounded and killed six others.

Since that tragedy, over 12,000 people have died from gun violence in the United States.

Sarita Villarreal shared the story of her brother who was shot and killed getting out of a car in Chicago to help a homeless man. Sarita has since started the organization, "Save Another Life."

Detention Center Opposition Grows

One week after the General Board of Pensions and Health Benefits moved to screen out the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) from its investment portfolio, citizens in Crete, IL, were told that the CCA wants to build in their area.

On Monday night, Jan. 9, more than 150 people gathered to hear from critics of the project on how the CCA routinely mistreats detainees, including withholding medical treatment and even nutritious food from detainees.  These detainees are immigrants who are not formally charged with any crime but are being held awaiting a formal hearing.  That hearing may take days, weeks, or even months.

Rev. Michael Mann, Associate Director of Mission and Advocacy, would like to organize meetings with local pastors around Crete and with elected officials in the area.  If you are interested, please contact him at mmann@umcnic.org

New Christmas Tradition in Glenview
Candlelight service at Schram Chapel

by Janet Ferrone

Glenview United Methodist Church (GUMC) offered a special community Christmas candlelight service at the historic Schram Memorial Chapel on Dec. 21. The service was geared toward those in the community who are not regular church attendees. Glenview Pastors  Rev. Hwa-Young Chong and Rev. Steve Granadosin along with Reverend E. Taveirne, from Bethany Methodist Communities, created a warm and meaningful experience for over 150 people who attended.

The Schram Memorial Chapel was built at the Glenview Naval Air Station during World War II.
This nondenominational chapel served as a house of worship for thousands of servicemen and women passing through the military base. Upon the closing of the naval base, it was refurb

ished and centrally relocated. Its simple grace is the perfect place to hold a worship service celebrating the birth of Jesus.

The service at the little white chapel attracted a variety of residents from the surrounding area, providing them with a welcoming atmosphere, and introducing them to Glenview UMC in a venue familiar to many of them. It also provided Glenview UMC with the opportunity to share its vision and service, and invite the potential for further participation.  This is an event that will certainly become a new Christmas tradition in Glenview.
