Communicator's Corner -From Albuquerque
|
I'm attending the United Methodist Association of Communicator's Annual Meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Our first day we volunteered at the Storehouse Food Pantry, the largest in Albuquerque. We bagged literally a ton of rice which will feed 200 families. The Storehouse provides food and clothing for 250 families a day from Tuesday through Saturday which adds up to about 2 million meals and 40,000 articles of clothing a year.
Our Keynote Speaker yesterday was Rev. Lorenza Andrade Smith who has been appointed to lead a ministry with the poor and marginalized people living in San Antonio. She gave away all her possessions, including her home, car and salary to live with the homeless.

Today, we will hear from, UMCOR, "Rethink Church" and a panel of UMC General Secretaries.
An App for That You can now get UMC information on the go!
Developed by United Methodist Communications and Music City Networks, an app is now available for free download for iPad and iPhone.
It should be available for Android smartphone users by the end of next week.

NIC School of Evangelism Welcomed Martin Marty
|
Martin E. Marty served as the keynote speaker at the NIC School of Evangelism, held on October 15, 2011, at Cornerstone UMC in Elgin. Over 130 attendees listened to his words of wisdom about "Christian Outreach in a Post-Christian Culture." He stressed that we must use the resources we have in the place where we find ourselves.
We were reminded that if we need to do the same three things that Wesley did: 1) experience God in Christ - let our hearts be warmed, 2) be organized in ways that make sense today, and 3) Spread scriptural holiness throughout the land. Dr. Marty believes that we are usually very good at two of these, but we need all three.
He sent participants off to the workshops to seek new ideas to bring a new look and energy to our work of spreading spiritual holiness, and working for social justice.
The 2011 recipients of the Harry Denman Evangelism Award were also introduced. Rev. Enrique Gonzalez is the clergy recipient and Beth Taylor is the lay recipient.

Urban Village Launches Third Site
| This past Sunday -- when Andersonville launched and Urban Village became one church in three places -- I had the overwhelming sense that we are blessed to be in the center of something that God is just doing.
Of course folks have worked hard -- very hard -- especially Brittany Isaac, our Associate Pastor, and an awesome launch team. Of course the planning and preparation have been thoughtful and detailed. Of course. But when 144 people showed up to celebrate the birth of our third site, part of nearly 300 total people who worshiped with us throughout the city on Sunday, I felt like: "something is happening." A capital S, Something More that we did not create but which we are undergoing.
Take a moment -- this moment, perhaps -- to thank God, the Something More from whom all good things come.
Peace,
Rev. Trey Hall
Services are held every Sunday morning at 10:30am at 1602 W. Ainslie St. For more info visit Urban Village's website

CLRN Annual Luncheon
| In December 2009, the United Nations General Assembly voted to approve 2011 as the "International Year for People of African Descent."
Recognizing the importance of this declaration, the Chicago Religious Leadership Network on Latin America (CRLN) 2011 Annual Luncheon will highlight the Garifuna community's (descendants of African and Carib ancestry) unceasing resistance against repression by the Honduran government. Our luncheon speaker, Miriam Miranda, will underscore the Garifuna community's self-determined route for political, cultural and social advancement.
Please come and join us to hear about the Garifuna community's determination and strength in the struggle for land and rights, especially after the 2009 coup d'état, at the CRLN Luncheon on November 3rd!
Click here, call the CRLN office at 773-293-3680, or email jvondracek@crln.org to learn more about the 2011 CRLN Annual Luncheon and to reserve your spot today! |
