trip? If so, please join the Learn and Serve Bus Trip sponsored by the Illinois Region of Church

World Service (CWS).

 

This October 30-November 3,

2011 trip will take participants

to the CWS Kit and Blanket,

and SERRV fair trade

warehouse in New Windsor, MD for three days of volunteering. Participants will learn

how CWS works with other

agencies, like UMCOR,

to respond in times of disaster,

and how CWS' development

work enables people to

lift themselves out of poverty.

 

After being a part of these

efforts through working

with materials in the

warehouses, the group will

enjoy time in Gettysburg, PA.

Human Relations Day Grants


August 10 is the deadline to apply for a Human Relations Day Grant from the United Methodist General Board of Church & Society (GBCS).  

 

The grants are to support ministries that respond to non-violent young offenders through education, advocacy or leadership training and development.

 

Grant funds are raised through The United Methodist Church's Human Relations Day Special Sunday each year.

World Methodist Conference

Durban City


Keep in your prayers those from the Northern Illinois Conference who are attending the 2011 World Methodist Conference in Durban, South Africa from August 4-8. Those traveling are Rev. Im Jung, Fabiola Grandon, Emmy Lou John, Rev. Robert Sathuri and Rev. Harriette Cross.

This year marks the 20th world gathering of the Methodist/Wesleyan family from more than 132 countries.

 

Participants in the Conference, conducted by the World Methodist Council, will gather under the theme "Jesus Christ - for the Healing of the Nations" and will experience African culture, hospitality and worship.

 

"We are grateful for the work of the World Methodist Council as many branches of the Methodist movement come together to celebrate, resource, plan and connect. Our prayers are with the gathering and all those who will be present from Northern Illinois."

Ministering to Those with a Hearing Loss

JFON Volunteer Training Session

Volunteers are needed for the Justice for Our Neighbors Clinic which offers free high-quality immigration legal services.   

 

A volunteer training session conducted by representatives from the General Board of Global Ministries will be held on Friday, August 5, 2011 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm.

Remembering 9/11 

Help make September 11th a day of HOPE!  

Several Northern Illinois Conference Churches are  participating in HopeFest 2011 on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, including:

 

First UMC of Park Ridge

New Hope UMC of Chicago

First UMC of Des Plaines

 

The day's activities will include tributes to local first responders, as well as blood drives, family friendly CPR classes, disaster response/relief class, food pantry collections, clean-up and repair projects, and elderly care for our local nursing home residents.

Cluster of Churches Participate in Day of Hope

 

The following churches: Christ UMC, Deerfield, North Shore UMC, Glencoe, Northbrook UMC and Glenview UMC are spending 9/11 in a "Day of Hope" by being in service outside the walls of their church.

 

Volunteer activities include: cleaning various city parks, singing at nursing homes, tending to Biblical and community gardens, helping clean and organize a resale store and food pantry, making Linus blankets, joining a prayer group or a knitting group and making get well cards. 

 

Each participating church will have a 15 minute service starting at 10:00 a.m.  Sign ups begin August 15. For more information contact: Janet Ferrone, Glenview UMC, 847-729-1015,  jferrone@glenviewumc.com.  

 

 

Summer Mission Trip Highlights 


19 youth and 7 adults from Woodridge United Methodist Church spent the week of June 19 in Mingo County, West Virginia. Once there, they joined groups from Wauconda, IL and Laverne, MN for a total of 70 people.

 

The group cleaned, scraped and repainted an entire house, gardened, built a wall and visited nursing home residents.
