First UMC of Arlington Heights Undergoing Placelift
|
The long awaited 'Placelift' of First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights has begun!
Phase 1A began with the temporary relocation of the congregation for Sunday Celebration on June 5th to The METROPOLIS Performing Arts Center in downtown Arlington Heights at 111 W. Campbell St. Services are held at 9:30am
Like many new church plants, ministry teams transport the tools for welcome, worship, education, and fellowship to their gathering each week. "Consolidating the necessities for mission and ministry into wheeled carts became an important theological exercise, not just a physical one", said Pastor Bonnie Beckonchrist, who leads their ministry team. "Our departing liturgy reflected our discovery. What did we need to take with us? The Word of God (the story of God and God's people), a pitcher and bowl for baptism, a chalice and paten for holy communion and most importantly, one another. Assured that God makes God's home among God's journeying children we go forth in faith"
Volunteers stored POD after POD after POD of furnishings and resources. The church shared long unused items with other congregations, disposing of obsolete and broken-beyond-repair stuff.
"There's something about clearing out that is good for the soul," said Beckonchrist.
The congregation expects to be out of their Euclid Avenue campus through 2011. The church office remains open.
