The 172nd session of the Northern Illinois Conference opened on Wednesday, June 8. It's been a busy two days of holy conferencing, elections of General Conference delegates, worship, song and fellowship. Some of the highlights:
- Memorial Service: Remembering our colleagues, Bishop Edsel Ammons, spouses of clergy, laity and friends who've passed on in the last year.
- UMCOR offering: NIC collected $453,000 for Haiti in 2010 and $101,000 for Japan Relief in 2011.
- Chicago Southern & Northwestern District Administrator, Connie Williams received the BMCR "Joy of Serving" award.
- Connie Williams and Peggy Morrell, Dekalb & Rockford District Administrator, recognized for their retirements.
- Ray Buckley shared stories of his Native American Ancestry.
- Legislation 900.12 overwhelmingly approved. NIC will petition the 2012 General Conference to delete a paragraph from the Book of Discipline which states: Ceremonies that celebrate homosexual unions shall not be conducted by our ministers and shall not be conducted in our churches.
- 24 Retired Clergy celebrated for their years of service.
- Bishop Javier Rojas of the Methodist Church of Bolivia celebrated. Special offering taken to support the partnership between NIC and the Evangelical Methodist Church in Bolivia.
- Harvest 2020 three year Capital Campaign introduced.
- Hispanic & Latino Lay Missioners commissioned.
- Delegates elected the General Conference: Clergy; Tracy Smith Malone, Gregorgy Gross & James Preston. Laity; Roger Curless, Irma Clark and Lonnie Chafin.
- UMM is working with the Blue Stars Mothers of America Inc. to raise money and get the devotional book, Strength for Service in the hands of hundreds of troops.
Still on Friday's schedule, the Ordination Service and Commissioning. The Conference will adjourn Saturday with a closing worship service led by NIC youth.

Peace with Justice Grants
|
Northern Illinois Conference Ministries receive part of $50,000 awarded in Peace with Justice grants WASHINGTON, D.C. - The United Methodist General Board of Church & Society (GBCS) has awarded grants totaling $50,000 to 18 Peace with Justice ministries. The grants are awarded in conjunction with the denomination's Peace with Justice Sunday, which supports programs that advocate peace and justice at home and around the world. Peace with Justice Sunday, June 19 this year, is one of the six denomination-wide Special Sundays with offering. Half of the Special Sunday offering is retained in the annual conference to fund local peace with justice programs. Half is remitted to the General Board of Church & Society to help fund U.S. and global work in social action, public-policy education and advocacy. More than $12,000 was awarded to Northern Illinois Conference ministries. Read more about the recipients by clicking here. |
