This year's Global Partnership Celebration will feature honored guests, special presentations and music. Bishop Joel Martinez Visits NIC

Bishop Jose Martinez and Rev. Oscar Carrasco

Bishop Joel Martinez &

Elgin Dist. Supt. Rev. Oscar Carrasco

Retired Hispanic-American Bishop, Joel Martinez of Texas visited the Northern Illinois Conference last week and was the guest speaker at the Elgin District Hispanic/Latino Lay Academy on Saturday. Bishop Martinez is traveling around the country on a mission to record the history and stories of the Methodist witness of the Hispanic/Latino community. Concerned that many of these stories would be lost, Martinez is conducting 150 videotaped interviews for a project titled, "The Oral History Project of the Hispanic/Latino Methodism".

Bishop Martinez conducts a local interview for his Hispanic/Latino Methodism history project

Bishop Martinez is working with the General Commission of Archive and History to preserve this historic information. "I wanted to hear the voices and testimony, particularly of our older generation who are passing away," said Martinez. "The interviews will be placed in the archives of the Church for future students, researchers, writers, and historians so that the memory and the journeys of different generations of Hispanic/Latino Methodists would be accessible and widely available." Bishop Martinez is about half way finished with the project and hopes to have it completed by the end of 2011.

ILCAAP - Lobby & Rally Day

The NIC Anti-Gambling Task Force was well represented at the Lobby Day/Rally in Springfield on May 12.  The day was organized by Anita Bedell, Executive Director of ILCAAAP (Illinois Church Action on Alcohol and Addiction Problems).  Rev Bill Bryan, Rev John Boryk (Illinois Coordinator for Stop Predatory Gambling (SPG), Nancy Duel, Kathy Gilroy, and Beth Paschall made the day's trip along with our large display board.
Rev John Boryk, Nancy Duel, Jan Klass (Rockford), Bette Thomas (North Chicago), Anita Bedell, Doug Dobmeyer (Chicago).

Features of the day in the Rotunda of the Capital were a skit by the ILCAAAP Teen Board, speeches by Boryk, Duel, and Bedell, as well as representatives from Chicago, North Chicago, and Rockford.

All were adamant in their opposition to any gambling expansion, especially slot machines at racetracks and any new casinos.  Please continue to contact your State Legislators and the Governor as the General Assembly rushes through the spring session, which should adjourn by May 31.  Gambling bills often appear in the last days of a session and are voted on quickly without study and scrutiny.  If you wish to be added to our the Action Alert e-mail list, please contact Nancy Duel at nduel@aol.com or Anita Bedell at ilcaaap@sbcglobal.net
