Bishop Arichea and Rev. Panlilio visit with volunteers

Bishop Daniel Arichea, Manila Episcopal Area-Philipinnes Central Conference, visited and talked with the volunteers. "It's very important," said Bishop Arichea regarding the relationship between NIC-VIM and his home country. "Not only is our connection strengthened, but the volunteers are involved in real on the ground service. They go all over the place and the communities they work with really makes a difference."

UMCOR Disaster Relief

This year's historic spring storm season has severely cut into the disaster relief funds that United Methodist annual conferences count on receiving from the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to help them rebuild homes and lives in the aftermath of a disaster.

According to the National Weather Service, 600 tornadoes were recorded in the United States in the month of April alone. Today, communities along the Mississippi River are bracing themselves for flooding from rainwater and snow-melt levels that haven't been seen since 1927.

For the third year in a row, record flooding is affecting communities along the Red River in North Dakota and Minnesota, and in Vermont, floodwaters from Lake Champlain are expected to surpass a previous high set in 1869.

UMCOR is working with annual conferences to respond to communities that have been devastated by these disasters, but funds are being disbursed faster than they are replenished. Your gift is urgently needed! Please give generously to US Spring Storms 2011, UMCOR Emergency Advance #3021326.

UMCOR's Relief-Supply Network is responding to needs provoked by severe weather in Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Missouri, Vermont and here in Illinois. While health kits are in plentiful supply, cleaning buckets are needed to respond to these emergencies and the upcoming hurricane season. In our conference, our camps at Wesley Woods and Reynoldswood are our cleaning bucket collection site.

For information on assembly and shipping of cleaning buckets, go to UMCOR.org. Your gift to Material Resource Ministry, UMCOR Advance #901440 also allows UMCOR to purchase cleaning bucket supplies for assembly and shipment.

 NIC-UMW Participate in Lobby Day

Rita L. Smith, Robbie Moultrie and Diane Dost from the Chicago: Northwestern district, plus  Sally von Bruenchenhein and Ester  Larson from the Elgin district, and Janice Gintzler from Chicago: Southern district hopped onto the 7 AM Amtrak train to Springfield. Likewise, Linda Frana, Julie McCutchan, and Nellie Winters drove in from DeKalb district. Rev. Michael Mann Associate Director of the NIC-UMC Office of Mission and Advocacy also joined the group.

Lobby Day was sponsored by Protestants for the Common Good and co-director Courtney Eccles filled us in on the legislation we would discuss with our legislators, as well as how to find them.  We went right to work.  Most of us met our representatives as they headed to the House chamber.  The senators were in session and committee meetings, so we had to leave information with their personable and alert secretaries. read the full story>>
