Grants and scholarships

1. Jan. 7 is the deadline to apply for a Peace with Justice grant from the United Methodist General Board of Church & Society (GBCS). Peace with Justice grants are awarded annually. In 2010, $50,000 was granted to 15 Peace with Justice ministries.

Grant applicants must be either a United Methodist or other affiliated organization, or an ecumenical group working with and through at least one United Methodist agency or organization.

Applicants may seek assistance in filling out the form, which is available on the GBCS Web site. For assistance, contact Marvlyn Scott, (202) 488-5643 or Rev. Chris Pierson, NIC Director of Connectional Ministries.

2. Deadline to apply for a 2011 Ethnic Young Adult Summer Internship in Washington, D.C., is Jan. 10. The EYA program is for persons, ages 18-22, who have an interest in exploring issues of public policy, social justice advocacy and social change.

Sponsored by the General Board of Church & Society (GBCS), the nine-week summer internship program is for young adults representing the five ethnic minority caucuses of The United Methodist Church: Native Americans, Pacific-Islanders, Hispanic/Latinos, African Americans and Asian Americans. Interns will work in social justice placements in the U.S. capital from May 28 to July 31.

3. Applications for grants to support caregiving ministries for older adults are now being accepted by the Center on Aging & Older Adult Ministries at the United Methodist General Board of Discipleship. Grant applications are available online at www.aging-umc.org. For more information, contact project coordinator Teri Kline at the Center for Aging & Older Adult Ministries by phone toll free at (877) 899-2780, Ext. 7177, or by e-mail at tkline@gbod.org.

4. NIC Board of Church and Society Grant Requests Due December 30. The Board of Church and Society administers two different grant programs: Emerging Ministries Grants, and Peace with Justice Grants. The same application is used to apply to both programs. All applications are due December 30, 2010.  Forms are available on the NIC website.

5. Fellowship of Asian-Americans has a few continuing education scholarships available on a first-come, first-served basis.  For information and an application form, please contact Rev. Noah Reyes Panlilio at pstrnoah@comcast.net.

November 28 is UM Student Day - Special Offering

By Matt Kuzma

Did you know that the United Methodist Church gives scholarships for 54 students from our conference to attend college or seminary this school year? Through our giving and the connection of the UMC, these students received more than $84,000 in grants to help cover the high cost of higher education.

College is expensive. Your congregation can help. Take a special offering this month. The funds will go to students in our conference and around the world.

World AIDS Day - December 1

By Irma Clark
Chair, NIC-HIV/AIDS Task Force

World AIDS Day is commemorated each year on Dec. 1. Each one of us can make a difference in creating an AIDS-free world, but it takes action and perseverance.  Let us continue to pray for those who are infected and affected by HIV. May God continue to bless us all as we continue this mission work for HIV/AIDS.
