Challenge Injustice
| By Rev. Arlene Christopherson Speech at Hotel Workers Rally - Hyatt Hotel, Chicago November 4, 2010 As prepared for delivery
When the Hebrew Scriptures were written, the men telling the story paid little attention to the role of women in the journey. But we know there is more to the story then grand speeches and dramatic scenes.
It was women who defied Pharaoh when he felt threatened and ordered new born sons to die. Women saw a better future for their children and risked death themselves.
As women, society often holds us in the shadows, an afterthought. We wander in a wilderness of uncertainty and INJUSTICE.
Women in the hotel workers industry make up 40 % of the hotel staff and 99% of the housekeepers. Like the defiant women in the shadows of the Exodus, this boycott is not about personal gain, you are organizing for your children's wellbeing, for family.
Coming out of the shadows and claiming a voice is a selfless act of courage. As a woman, I have worked to come out of the shadows, claiming my leadership in a male dominated setting.
It is time to recognize that women play a key role in making the hotel industry profitable. I know your actions take courage and conviction as you challenge INJUSTICE.
As United Methodists we believe in human rights, human dignity. The wilderness is vast but we go forward with faith. As the sisters from 8th Day Center for Justice sing "Step by Step" we are reminded that a woman's voice does matter.

November 28 is UM Student Day - Special Offering
| By Matt Kuzma
Did you know that the United Methodist Church gives scholarships for 54 students from our conference to attend college or seminary this school year? Through our giving and the connection of the UMC, these students received more than $84,000 in grants to help cover the high cost of higher education.
College is expensive. Your congregation can help. Take a special offering this month. The funds will go to students in our conference and around the world.
