Haiti Response Update
|
From Rev. Christina Vosteen and the NIC Disaster Response Team: UMCOR is requesting we add Layette Kits to our donation collections. Even after such tragedy and loss in the earthquake, new babies are being born every day. The conditions are desperate for these infants. As we are doing with the health kits, we are to collect in bulk. This dramatically speeds the flow of donations through UMCOR processing and on into Haiti. With this additional request, I pray that we will re-energize our efforts in ministry to our sisters and brothers, including the newborn baby sisters and baby brothers! And thanks be to God for all that's been done and continues to happen! LAYETTE KITS cloth diapers shirts or one-piece body suits baby washcloths gowns or sleepers diaper pins sweaters that open in the front (can be handmade) receiving blankets To find dropoff locations or to add your church to the list, please contact Rev. Vosteen at pastorcls@aol.com.

Join Thousands Calling for Just Immigration Reform March 21st in Washington, DC
|
By Rev. Michael Mann
On Sunday, March 21st, thousands of those seeking to be faithful to the Biblical call to welcome the sojourner will rally for just immigration reform now! This event is being held in conjunction with Ecumenical Advocacy Days - http://www.advocacydays.org. Just as Jesus had nowhere to lay his head, neither do tens of millions of migrants, refugees and displaced persons. There are 1,100 deportations every day - more
in the last year than at any time in the previous 10 years. The rally on March 21st will call for changes in the current laws.
Across our Conference, we have seen the effects of current immigration laws in our country. Ordained elders have been deported because of minor paperwork details, churches have gone without needed leadership, and families have been separated. Those families have included clergy couples where one spouse is working as a pastor and the other is still living abroad. Current laws slow down or directly stop some who are responding to God's call to full-time pastoral work. Because of current immigration laws, we are straining to do the work of Harvest 2020 in our Conference.
Be a part of the March for America. Join with the General Board of Church and Society, the United Methodist Women and concerned church members from across our Connection who will not stand by as our broken immigration system rips families apart. They will not allow anger, frustration, and misunderstanding to continue to divide our nation. Among the thousands at the march will be Bishop Minerva CarcaƱo, Desert Southwest Conference, Sung-ok Lee, Assistant General Secretary of the Women's Division, and executives from the General Board of Church and Society.
Buses will leave Illinois locations (listed below) on Saturday, March 20th and return Monday, March 22nd. Cost of the trip is $100 for transportation (not including food). To reserve a seat on any of the following buses (or questions), contact the coordinator listed below. Donations are encouraged to allow more students and families to come!
