The council of Bishops of the UMC has led the church in concentrating upon four area of focus for the church's mission. Two of them will be addressed at this event:

1) Engaging in ministry with the poor

2) Stamping out killer diseases of poverty by improving global health

  • Start new health and poverty ministries to reach out to your community
  • Develop the internal framework needed to support health and poverty ministries
  • Engage and mobilize community leaders to promote and support your ministry
  • Identify resources in your community to support your health and poverty ministry

The United Methodist Foundation announces a seminar to assist clergy with preparation of their 2009 tax returns. The seminar will be led by Lynette Rice, CPA. Lynette is a Benefits Education Specialist with the General Board of Pension and Health Benefits and an active United Methodist with many years of experience working with clergy financial issues.  Her presentation will be informative and interactive.

Apportionments Update

With just one week remaining before we must close the books on 2009, an additional 31 churches have paid 100% of their Apportionments.  That brings the total to 188 (or 50%) of all churches in the Northern Illinois Conference.  The final date the conference will be accepting money for 2009 is January 20th, 2010.

Martin Luther King Events at North Central College

Panel discussion of alumni and friends remembering Dr. King.  Panelists include former NCC Chaplain Rev. George St. Angelo, Rev. Robert Harman, and Rev. Dr. Kwame John Porter, Jan. 16, 5 p.m.

A limited number of free tickets are available to the Chicago Symphonietta's tribute to Dr. King in Wentz Concert Hall 8 p.m., Jan. 16.  (Free tickets are for NCC alumni and guests, so if you don't know a North Central graduate, you can say that you are a guest of Chaplain Lynn Pries.)

Cokesbury moves to Naperville
