Help prevent video poker expansion - the battle is not over!

By Nancy Duel, 847-259-3793, nduel@aol.com

OPERATION LET THE PEOPLE DECIDE
TOM GREY AVAILABLE FOR VIDEO POKER MEETINGS

Tom Grey will be in the Northern Illinois Conference from Thanksgiving through December 3rd.  He will be available for informational meetings on video poker from November 30 through December 3rd.  He is currently scheduled for St. Charles UMC on Monday, November 30, at 7:30 pm.  He is willing to speak morning, afternoon, or evening, on any day December 1st through 3rd, and morning or afternoon on November 30.

The battle is not over.  We need more meetings in local communities.  We also need more local people contacting village boards, city councils, and county boards to request a ban on video poker.

Contact Nancy Duel at 847-259-3793 or nduel@aol.com to schedule Tom Grey, or for help in planning local meetings or action.

For more information on the St. Charles meeting, contact Al Patten at 630-584-8836.
Faith and Food Program - Church and Society

By Rev. Bob Campbell

The Board of Church and Society wants to help those who are struggling in the current economy by encouraging churches to sponsor community meals. The Board will give grants of $100 per church for the first 25 local churches who agree to host an open community meal as part of the new "Faith and Food" project during Lent. Churches who agree to host such a meal can apply to be one of the first 25 by sending an email with their contact information to nicbcs@gmail.com with the title "Faith and Food Program."

Meals are only one part of "Faith and Food." The Board of Church and Society encourages you to submit sermons, liturgies, prayers, and other resources that can be shared with other churches. These resources will be placed on the Church and Society page of the conference website so that others can use them. What role does food play in your faith? How does your faith impact the way you eat? How can we find ways to help others who don't know where they will find their next meal? Do you know of volunteer opportunities that fit this theme?

Blue Christmas service at Red Oak

From Rev. Katie Mapes:

A community "Blue Christmas" service will be offered to all folks in the Bureau County area on Saturday, December 5 at 4 p.m. at Red Oak United Methodist Church. A Blue Christmas worship service is designed especially for those who may not be feeling very joyful during the holiday season: those who are mourning loved ones, or have suffered other losses in health, in jobs, in family relationships.

The focus in the service is on naming our losses rather than feeling we have to hide them, and then hearing God's offer of love, faith, healing and hope.

The service is open to anyone. A time of sharing fellowship will follow the time of worship. Red Oak UMC is located between Ohio and Walnut, north of Route 92 off of 1700 E St, turning west on 2900 N Ave.

The event is being sponsored by United Methodist churches in the area, including Princeton (815-872-2821), Walnut (815-379-2494), Wyanet, Malden, Ohio (815-376-4731), Lamoille, and Red Oak. Persons who would like to attend but prefer not to drive that far at night are invited to call Princeton, Walnut, or Ohio churches to see if carpooling can be arranged.
