Reporter Subscriptions and Charge Conference

By Matt Kuzma, Director of Communications

Hello friends, as charge conferences begin this fall, this is the time of year when we update our subscription lists for various conference communications.

We strive to support you in carrying out the mission of the church and to let you and your fellow leaders know about the resources and opportunities for service that the Annual Conference and the General Church can provide your congregation.

Due to the high cost of print and low cost of electronic communication, we encourage you to sign as many of your leaders up for the eNews and electronic communications as possible. We try not to send more than 1-2 emails per week to this list and we focus like a Holy Laser Beam on resources and stories that instruct, inspire and celebrate United Methodists who are making disciples of Jesus Christ and changing the world. We also use these emails for emergency communications and to highlight new resources and stories on our website, which will relaunch with a new design and features this fall.

Anyone may sign up for electronic communications by entering their email address on the left side of any page of our website, http://www.umcnic.org and may find free content from the national United Methodist Reporter at http://www.umportal.com

Your church will be receiving a letter and form with a list of current subscribers to the United Methodist Reporter. Because print costs are very high, we encourage all those who are comfortable with electronic media to discontinue their free subscription to the Reporter using that paper form or the online form. Please note that we are continuing to publish the Reporter free of charge to those who want to subscribe, with no minimum or maximum number of subscriptions for each local church. We are committed to using print and mail to communicate with those in the conference who prefer that medium. In fact, we are exploring other print media, bulletin inserts, and a special publication for retired clergy.

The fact is that newspapers are very expensive to publish. By encouraging willing subscribers to use electronic communications, our communications department can reach more people while saving up to $40,000 of apportionment dollars in 2010. These are funds that can be used for other valuable ministries.

If you have any concerns or questions about our communications, please contact me at mkuzma@umcnic.org or 773-419-1146.

NIC organizing to oppose video poker expansion

Update:
"Video gambling takes a beating," Sun-Times News Group
"Homewood residents take side on gambling," Sun-Times News Group
"Gambling debate at town hall meeting," Sun-Times News Group
"Nearly 60% oppose video gambling," Chicago Tribune

The Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church, the Task Force to Oppose Gambling for Chicago and national anti-gambling organization Stop Predatory Gambling are working together to encourage city neighborhoods, towns and villages to reject video poker in their communities.

The new effort, called "Operation Let the People Decide," will be holding public meetings in local communities to educate people on the video poker issue in their jurisdictions. We believe that citizens should have the right to either reject or invite gambling into their neighborhoods.

Earlier this year, the Illinois General Assembly passed legislation that authorized the expansion of video poker into restaurants, bars and fraternal organizations. Funds from the gambling machines would be used to finance statewide capital improvement.

Debate about this funding mechanism did not include the public in any meaningful way. It was added in the waning days of the legislative session. With an estimated 45,000 video poker machines needed to raise the required revenue for the capital bill, many towns and cities across the state could be affected.

Meetings are scheduled for:

Sept. 24, 7:00 p.m., Our Redeemer UMC, Schaumburg, 1600 W. Schaumburg Rd.
Contact: Jon Montgomery, 847-687-2416

For more information, please contact Rev. John Boryk at jaboryk@comcast.net or (202) 567-6996, ext. 4.
Opportunities for green infrastructure grants

swaleBy Sara Spoonheim, Faith in Place

Do you want to pilot state-of-the-art storm water management practices in your congregation? Are you thinking about repaving your parking lot? Are you tired of flooding at your church?

Faith in Place is looking for partners in Cook and Lake counties to pilot "green infrastructure" to transform rainwater into a valuable resource. Once we secure funding, two or three congregations will become demonstration sites with green technology like permeable pavers, low-maintenance rain gardens, parking lot bioswales, 300-gallon cisterns, vertical gardens, etc.

Eligible sites must have external downspouts with some unpaved area nearby or a parking lot with flooding problems, be willing to put some financial and volunteer resources into the effort, agree to use their site for educational events, and test a new FiP curriculum on water with a group in their congregation.

Intrigued? Call Sara at 312-733-4640 right away! We'd like to include your interest in a grant proposal we're submitting on October 15.

Pancake Breakfast of the Week
pancakesyorkville

The PBotW is off this week and is in training for a race next month. There is no better way to load up on pre-race carbs than with pancakes!

Here's a report on a recent breakfast:

Trinity UMC, Yorkville

The pancake breakfast was part of the Hometown Day Festival at Yorkville, Illinois.  The men's group served a traditional pancake breakfast for three straight mornings.  They donated breakfast plates to anyone who ran in the 5K race as part of the festival.  They also served breakfast before and after a worship service that Trinity UMC held at the festival on Sunday morning.  In addition they made hot dogs, single and double cheeseburgers, walking tacos and cheese steaks to attendees for lunch and dinner while United Methodist Women sold drinks and dessert.

Please send your pancake breakfast or other meal to communications@umcnic.org with the subject line "Pancakes."
