Feedback from Laity Summit
|

More than 350 people joined Rev. Gil Rendle and Bishop Jung at the Laity Summit last Saturday. Here's a sample of the comments from the evaluations:
- "I learned that our church needs leadership, not just management of the day to day"
- "I was encouraged to see that our church isn't the only one struggling to find ways to bring in new people"
- "The most important thing is to be true to our purpose and mission"
Rev. Rendle has agreed to let us post his slides on our website, and we will be posting video and audio from the summit in the coming weeks. Thank you to all who attended!

Feedback from Stewardship Event
|
More than 400 people attended the August UM Foundation stewardship event, led by Rev. Clif Christopher. For more information about stewardship, Rev. Christopher, or any financial matters, please contact the Foundation at info@nicumf.org or 312.346.9766, extension 104.
Here are comments from some of the participants:
Rev. Brian Roots, Christ UMC Deerfield: "I learned the importance of telling the story of how
we are accomplishing our purpose which is changing lives. We want to find various
ways to tell the stories of how lives are impacted through the life of our
church and Clif offered several suggestions (letters, offering time in worship). We are having the financial
leadership at the church read Clif's book.
Bob Whitley, First UMC, Plainfield: "I learned that stewardship is continuing and must be headed up
by the pastor-the pastor must have full information including names of the
givers and how much they give." Rev. Julie Windsor Mitchell, Campus
Minister, Northwestern Univ: "Our Board of Directors learned we must share
personal, transformational faith stories of our students and alumni.
People will give to our ministry when they know how our ministry empowers young
adults to become thoughtful Christian leaders for the global church and the
complex world." Rev. Daniel Park, Journey Community Church (Harvest 2020 New Faith Community): "I learned that if our
church could truly carry out its mission and show our congregation the
many different ways that we are transforming lives, that it will only
increase our financial strength. People are more prone to give when
they believe the mission and see the fruit of the church.

NIC organizing to oppose video poker expansion
|
The Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist
Church, the Task Force to Oppose Gambling for Chicago and national
anti-gambling organization Stop Predatory Gambling are joining forces to
encourage city neighborhoods, towns and villages to reject video poker in their
communities.
The new effort, called "Operation Let the People Decide," will be holding public meetings in local
communities to educate people on the video poker issue in their jurisdictions.
We believe that citizens should have the right to either reject or invite
gambling into their neighborhoods.
Earlier this year, the Illinois General Assembly passed
legislation that authorized the expansion of video poker into restaurants, bars
and fraternal organizations. Funds from the gambling machines would be used to
finance statewide capital improvement.
Debate about this funding mechanism did not include the
public in any meaningful way. It was hurriedly added through a secretive
process in the waning days of the legislative session. With an estimated 45,000
video poker machines needed to raise the required revenue for the capital bill,
many towns and cities across the state could be affected.
Meetings are scheduled for:
Sept. 17, 7:30 p.m., First UMC Des Plaines, 666 Graceland Contact: Jim Blue, 847-404-8254

In Step With Bishop Jung
|
From Greg Morhardt, First UMC PoloThis August, our church held a pot luck dinner
for the Blackhawk Cluster and Bishop Jung. The Bishop had been visiting
our cluster churches all day which concluded his journey in the DeKalb
District. After the meal and fellowship, Bishop Jung conducted
a church service discussing the 5 Core Values of Harvest 2020.
Now on a personal note, this is the first
time that I had met the Bishop. The Bishop immediately migrated toward
my children and invited them to join him at the front of the potluck
line. Then he sat at the table with my three children (ages 9, 12 and 19,) my wife and me.
He was extremely personable and shared family stories and asked my kids
lots of questions. My kids were very impressed that a
man of such high status was so nice. My 12 year old son said, "You
can tell he is a Dad". To me this is one of the highest compliments
that a 12 year old boy can give.
From Bishop Jung
Here is a photo of my visit with the JoDavies County Cluster in September. It was an excellent visit of ten churches and an evening gathering of 80+ folks and their cluster leaders.
We have now visited all of the clusters in the Chicago NW, Southern and DeKalb Districts, and soon Rockford.
I praise God for our amazing laity and clergy leaders out there and their active and engaging churches in the Northern Illinois Conference.
Peace, Hee-Soo Jung
