In Step With the Bishop

Bishop Hee-Soo Jung

Many thanks to all of you who attended or volunteered for the School of Congregational Development this month.

District Superintendents, program staff, support staff and so many others greeted, encouraged, fed, transported, supported and guided visitors throughout the week.  Ten of our congregations served as Sunday morning teaching churches hosting more than 400 participants in worship, lunch and conversation about their unique ministries.  From Rockford to Evanston, our guests experienced the outstanding stories of ministry, innovation, creativity, and dedication that are alive and thriving in many local churches.

Thank you, and I hope you are enjoying your summer.

Northbrook UMC Youth Mission Trip to San Marcos,Texas

Brian Boyer, Northbrook UMC

San Marcos, Texas was the destination for Northbrook UMC's Senior High Mission Trip.  Six adults and 16 youth spent a week putting their faith into action by working on homes of the very poor, elderly or disabled.  This San Marcos River Work Camp was run by a Methodist organization, Southside Community Center,  which also operates a homeless shelter and a thrift shop.  We worked and worshiped alongside 45 other workers from UMCs in Dallas and Waverly, Nebraska.  Most of the homes we were rehabbing were over 50 years old and had been in the same family for many generations. Work days began with a 6:15 AM wake up call and were especially challenging due to the 100-degree heat.

Other challenges of the worksites included encounters with fleas, cockroaches and notorious Texas fire ants.  In spite of all these issues, everyone worked incredibly hard and was very committed to their various projects. The beauty of these mission trips is that they combine several different elements to create a very rich experience...hard work, worship/devotions, and great fellowship and fun.  Everyone returned with a sense of accomplishment, grateful hearts, a closer connection with each other and with God.

Wauconda Federated and Antioch UMC Mission Trip

Betsy Houghton

Wauconda Federated and Antioch United Methodist Churches combined to send a group of 42 youth and adults to Red Bird Mission in Beverly, KY.  The group left on Sunday, July 26, and returned Saturday evening, August 1. At the work camp they worked at three separate worksites, completing such work as replacing windows and a door in a basement storeroom, building a roof over a back porch, restoring a rotting foundation wall and flooring destroyed when a mudslide settled against the back of the house. The youth found splitting firewood and cracking black walnuts a productive pastime waiting for other assignments. The group was led by Nikki Georgia, youth director at Antioch UMC and Ryan Sutton, pastor at Wauconda Federated Church.
