In Step with the Bishop
|
I was honored to be a preacher at
an event of the Korean Central Conference and the Korean Methodist
Church. The event was on the 271th anniversary of Wesley's Aldersgate
Celebration. More than 10,000 people gathered in Samsan Stadium in
Inchon City on May 28.
This was an amazing event and the first time I had preached in such a mass gathering. The people yearn
for reconciliation between North and South Korea and for repentance for social turmoils.
I felt the Holy Spirit worked in my preaching and in solidarity with Korean Christians.

Call to Action on Potential Illinois Budget Cut |
Social service agencies from around the state are concerned about the impact that proposed Illinois state budget cuts might have on their ability to help those most in need. Our clergy leaders spoke out about this issue last week. Here are two recent updates from our connection:
Chicago Sun-Times: Tax hike needed to save services, activists say
"This is not just a Chicago issue, but a statewide issue," said Sirchester W. Jackson, pastor of Mandell United Methodist Church, which hosted the event on the city's West Side. "It's time to call our legislators into action."
Sent by Ryan Dowd, Executive Director, Hesed House - Aurora
On the potential budget cuts:
Of particular concern is the ripple effect that these cuts will have
throughout the community. No longer will Mutual Ground, the only
domestic violence agency in Aurora, be able to offer shelter services
to women and their children who have been forced to leave their homes
for safety reasons. According to Linda Healey, Executive Director of
Mutual Ground, "the loss of $541,780 in funding means that we have to
close the doors of the shelter. I have no where for those families to
go - every domestic violence agency is in the same situation."
An
already overcrowded situation at Hesed House, an agency serving
homeless families and individuals, is likely to get worse. Already we
have people sleeping in chairs every single night because we are out of
beds. If these cuts are allowed to go through, we will not be able to
shelter everyone who becomes homeless as a result. Some individuals and
families will be forced to sleep on the street.
We urge all members of the conference to contact their state legislators with the following messages:
- Don't balance the budget on the backs of families and children. It's not the way toward economic recovery.
- Don't pass a budget with 50% cuts to vital programs such as child care, Preschool For All and children's mental health.
- Do
pass a budget that fully funds the vital services needed by low-income
families and children. Do the right thing by passing a fair budget.

Faith Groups mobilize on health care reform
|
From the Illinois Campaign for Better Health Care:
The Campaign for Better Health Care
has invited the Illinois Conference of Churches to participate in the
Health Care Justice Action Week which will be held June 22nd-June 27th.
The next couple of months will determine if health care reform occurs.
The information coming out of Washington is that the differences
between the House and Senate proposals will be debated during August
and September, with a final proposal to be voted on in late September
or October. Attached is some information regarding the activities that
your judicatories/congregations can be involved during this week to
join other Illinoisans across the state in this opportunity.
You may call the CBHC Office at 217-352-5600 (downstate), or 312-913-9449 (Chicago area) or visit the CBHC website at www.cbhconline.org for additional information about the Health Care Justice Action Week.

Faith in Action: Christ UMC Rockford
|

By Laura Widstrom, Rockford: Christ UMC
It
brought me great joy to get up for church on Sunday, May 17th and to be
able to pull on my favorite blue jeans, as worship was not going to
stay within the four walls of our sanctuary that day! Faith took on
hands and feet in various corners of our church building and throughout
our community as we participated in a program called Faith in Action
(FIA).
