Bishop and Mrs. Jung

Bishop and Mrs. Jung serving communion at Annual Conference

June schedule:

June 18-19 Cabinet Meeting
June 22-25 Upper Room Advisory Board Meeting
Annual Conference Official Report

By Matt Kuzma, Interim Director of Communications
June 10, 2009

United Methodists of the Northern Illinois Conference took bold action to grow the church by approving the launch of more than 20 new faith communities at its 2009 Annual Conference, held June 7-9 in St. Charles, Ill. The expansion is part of a long-term plan the conference and presiding Bishop Hee-Soo Jung have undertaken to respond to the changing demographics and needs of the people of Northern Illinois. These efforts would expand the number of churches in the conference by nearly 5%.

Most of the new faith communities will launch in July without dedicated buildings, allowing the new church planters to begin their ministries without the burden of a mortgage or facility upkeep. Instead, the new starts are using a variety of growth models, such as community service, small groups and house meetings to reach unchurched people where they are and build relationships. The new faith communities will also be financed creatively, with funding coming from apportionments, closed church funds, national plans, partner churches and individual donors.

The conference voted to approve apportionments in 2010 of $7.09 million, a decrease of 2.5% from the 2009 budget. Financial issues were addressed several times during the conference, as Treasurer Lonnie Chafin informed members of the "perfect storm" of bad economic factors affecting UM churches: declining endowments, increasing health care costs and decreasing giving from local churches. Chafin said that national progress on health care reform will be vital in the coming years to keep the conference from being overwhelmed by health care costs.

Debate on constitutional amendments that were passed in the 2008 General Conference was lively; members spent most of the floor time discussing the worldwide nature of the church and the constitutional language regarding inclusiveness. In respect for conferences that have not voted yet, the Northern Illinois Conference will not report its results until all other conferences have voted.

The conference approved resolutions that advocated for the rights of the disabled and created new standards in environmental stewardship for conference staff and properties.

Four deacons and ten elders were ordained on the first night of the conference. The average age of the class is 35.

Bishop Scott J. Jones of the Kansas Episcopal Area led the conference in Bible Study during the first and second days of the conference, while Bishop Sally Dyck of the Minnesota Episcopal Area preached during the service of ordination.  Bishop Wayne L. Miller of the Episcopal Lutheran Church of America celebrated communion with Bishop Jung at the ordination service.

Membership stands at 101,883, a decrease of 1,685 from the previous year. Worship attendance stands at 43,552, a decrease of 10. Church school attendance stands at 44,251, an increase of 378 from the previous year. For more information about the Northern Illinois Conference, please visit www.umcnic.org.

The Northern Illinois Conference United Methodist Men have reserved a Bus (Rockford Charter Coach) for the 10th Annual Meeting of United Methodist Men in Nashville, Tenn.  The dates of the event are July 10th-12th.  The Coach will leave from two pick up locations for convenience of our members and guests.  We would like to invite all men to join us on this great opportunity to hear dynamic speakers and great music.

We will leave Rockford Airport at 9:00 p.m. on July 9th and proceed to Sycamore UMC for the second pick up at 10:00 p.m. There is no cost to park at either location. The Ministry Fair begins Friday morning at 10:00 A.M.  This will allow those who want to attend the opening programs to be there early on Friday morning.

We need 50 passengers in order to rent a van.  Our absolutely final day to let the bus company know is June 29th.  If we do not have 50 passengers, the bus will be cancelled.  So, if you would like to make the trip to Nashville with a group, please contact me before June 29th.  You may reach me by email, sdnailor@comcast.net, or by phone, (815) 282-4432.  We will need your name, address, email address and phone number.  The cost will be $85.00 per passenger.

This should be a great event of worship and Christian service with other men from around the country. Do not wait! Please let us know if you are interested in going to Nashville before June 29th.

Pancake Breakfast of the Week

brats

This week's winner comes from Ann Hecathorn of Earlville UMC:

We aren't serving pancakes, but shoppers will breakfast on brats, hamburgers and hot dogs on Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20. Beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the air conditioned Earl Township building on Route 34 (Ogden Ave.) east of Earlville, Illinois, members of the LETS congregations will be serving food and selling rummage during "More on 34," the 100-mile yard sale from Sandwich to Galesburg.

Leland, Earlville, Truimph and Suydam United Methodist Churches, the LETS congregations, invite you all to enjoy a slice of homemade pie with breakfast. Then browse our tables of bargains. Proceeds support the Fun Day outreach events offered to all community children during their school breaks by the churches.

Please send candidates for Pancake Breakfast (or other community meal) of the Week to mkuzma@umcnic.org, subject line "Pancakes."
