New Bible Study on UMCNIC.org

The Northern Illinois Conference and the Office of Connectional Ministries have launched a new Bible study, The Whole of Holiness: Is Living a Holy Life Possible?

Philip Amerson and Barry Bryant, professors at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill., take a look at what Social Holiness means for today.  Looking at the false divisions commonly held between an emphasis on personal or social holiness, the authors point to the Great Commandment, affirmed by Jesus, that hold the love of God and the love of neighbor as a unity.

Copies of the Bible Study were mailed to each church earlier in May. Please see our website for more details on how to order additional copies or to download a free study guide.
Free Media Resources
Attention communications folks (or churches who do not yet have communications folks!) - the conference communications office now has this year's Community Media Guide, which has media contacts for print, radio, web and TV outlets across Illinois. Want to promote an event? This guide has the goods, so you can reach out to new people.

For more information, please email Matt at mkuzma@umcnic.org.
Many churches offering financial seminars

Not a new story, but we wanted to lift up churches that have been helping their communities by offering financial education.

Maywood: Neighborhood UMC held a Financial Workshop on credit, budgeting, and mortgages. The seminar was led by a local law firm.

Elmhurst: First UMC hosted a luncheon event to present information on planned giving strategies.  Members over the age of 60 received personal invitations in the mail, and the event was open to the entire congregation.  The keynote speaker was Janet Boryk, Director of Planned Giving for the United Methodist Foundation.

The United Methodist Foundation staff can help instruct your church about planned giving strategies such as the charitable gift annuity, wills, trusts, power of attorney, Endowment fund giving and more.

 Peace With Justice Sunday

Justice DoorThis Sunday is Peace With Justice Sunday. Visit umcgiving.org for resources on involving your church with this special Sunday.

Established by the 1988 General Conference, Peace with Justice Sunday supports programs that advocate peace and justice at home and around the world. Since 50% of the offerings collected by your annual conference are retained to fund local peace with justice programs, you can see a difference made locally. The other half of the offering is remitted to the General Board of Church and Society to help fund U.S. and global work in social action, public-policy education and advocacy.

Pancake Breakfast of the Week

There are no Pancake Breakfasts at Annual Conference. This makes PBotW very upset.

Let's cope by having dessert,  talking justice and listening to a gospel choir.

Monday night at 9:00 p.m.

Speaker: Kim Bobo
Executive Director and founder of Interfaith-Worker Justice.

Kim is the author of "Wage
Theft in America: Why Millions of Working Americans Are Not Getting Paid - And What
We Can Do About It" and "Organizing for Social
Change."

Musical Guest:
Willie B. Clay Inspirational Choir
from Gorham UMC, singing selections from their newly-released CD "God's Favor."

Cost: $7.50

Please send candidates for Pancake Breakfast (or other community meal) of the Week to mkuzma@umcnic.org, subject line "Pancakes."
