November 20, 2008
Greetings!

Did you know that November is National Career Development Month?

With more than 1.2 million job losses so far in 2008, this is a great time to evaluate your next career move.  This is definitely the time to be positive and take charge of our own career or job satisfaction, rather than speculate about if and when the pink slip is coming.

One way to take charge is by checking out the BullsEye career blog entries I posted in November 2007 with 30 suggestions, one for each day, on activities to do or initiate during National Career Development Month.

Here are some sample activities for the month:

As always, I encourage questions and welcome feedback.

In the meantime - stay focused and Happy Thanksgiving!

Paying It Forward in a Tough Economy
Helping Hand
My husband and I were in line yesterday at a major retailer known for cool cotton attire. It was a pretty long line and we soon found out why. It appears that the store and other affiliates were offering a sale, giving a 30% discount to shoppers who had retrieved a coupon online.  Not only that, a bad retail economy had reduced the staff to only two sales associates.  One customer's kindness caused me to think about how to help others who might be struggling with a job search.
american flagCan you believe the presidential election is over?  Some people still can't, but I am actually happy that we have completed what we know as the longest, most public job interview ever!  I made this list of 30 Career Lessons from Barack Obama's Presidential Campaign the day after the election.  It doesn't matter what your politics is, you could easily insert any name you want here and these 30 tips would still be valid...and appropriate.  Can you think of others?
No Experience? What Employers Want on Your College Resume american flag

Having worked with and coached many college students and new graduates to successful careers, I know that one of the big questions I always get asked is - Where will I get the experience that employers seek?  Chances are if you have worked with new graduates too, you have heard the same question.  Here is a great checklist of activities that will impress employers even in a tight job market.
LAST WORD!

Dthanksgivingo Not Take A Holiday From Interviewing This Year!

Many job seekers take a vacation from the job search, during the holidays for obvious reasons.  Some people think that no one is hiring during the holidays and others just get overwhelmed with holiday activities.

If you are looking for work, do not make that mistake this year.  Job seekers should know that employers are hiring all of the time if they have a need for workers.  The job seeker who stays focused and continues to search throughout the holidays  will probably have more success.  Use the holidays to network and talk about your employment or career issues with friends and family! You never know where a new contact will lead.
