Are breast implants safe?
A common question that is asked in Plastic Surgery is "Are breast
implants safe?" The answer is "yes". There has been a fair amount of
debate about their safety over the past ten to fifteen years after
the initial problems with early implants. A significant amount of
press and concern was created due to their rupture. The silicone
gel implant was taken off the market for breast augmentation but
remained available for reconstruction. After an extensive process by
the FDA, the silicone gel implant was brought back onto the market in
late 2007. The new version of the implant is much improved and is
made of a cohesive gel rather than the more liquid gel of the early
implants. Presently, there has been no scientific evidence that the
early implants were harmful. Saline-filled implants have always been
available and are not harmful if they rupture. Whether one uses gel
or saline-filled implants the main risk is capsular contracture or
hardening of the implant and rupture. Thousands of breast implants
have been used across the globe and the body of evidence has shown
them to be safe.
